Curtin Sarawak students learn about occupational health and safety at BSTS

Miri – 30 May 2013 – In line with the university’s emphasis on practical learning and connectedness to industry, the Chemical Engineering Student Club (CESC) of Curtin University Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently organised a site visit for its members to Borneo Safety Training Services (BSTS) in Desa Senadin.

A total of 26 chemical, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering students and Engineering First Year (EFY) students joined the visit. They were accompanied by lecturer of chemical engineering Dr. John Lau Sie Yon.

The purpose of the visit was to expose the students to occupational health and safety and emergency response procedures at work sites. They also got to familiarise themselves with various safety apparatus and the ongoing safety training activities at BSTS.

The students were taken on a tour of the classrooms and training sites, which was followed by a briefing on the training activities conducted there by BSTS Business Development Executive Rachel B. Mac, as well as a talk on the importance of occupational health and safety (OHS) in the workplace.

They learned that in the oil and gas industry, it is compulsory to attend safety courses prior to starting a job in the industry. This is to avoid mishaps at work that might lead to injury and losses to the company.

BSTS is a training provider that offers training and consultancy services in emergency response, safety skills and management, crisis management, as well as marine STCW ’95 training and other courses.
