Curtin Sarawak’s E-FacT conducts ‘Waja Diri’ motivational camp for secondary school students

Miri – 30 September 2010 – The Curtin Excellence Educational Facilitating Team (Curtin E-FacT) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), recently conducted a motivational camp themed ‘Waja Diri’ (Self Image) for Form 1, 2 and 4 students of SMK St. Columba, Miri.

Curtin E-FacT is a group of student volunteers who are committed to promoting learning in the local community through academic and motivational programmes. It conducts camps of such nature for both primary and secondary school students annually.

20 Curtin E-FacT members were involved in this particular 3-day, 2-night camp held at Indin Resort on Jalan Bakam.

The objectives of the camp were to instil the qualities of self-discipline, strict time management, teamwork, patience, tolerance, creativity and appreciation of self-worth in the students through a series of workshop and activity modules. The modules also emphasise the importance of a positive attitude and good moral values.

The students are encouraged to apply what they learn during the camps in their daily lives so that they will continually improve as individuals and students.

According to Khairul Asyraf Khalid, President of Curtin Sarawak E-FacT, it is always a joy conducting such events for local students.

He added that the SMK St. Columba students were most enthusiastic about the Waja Diri Camp, and actively participated in all the modules and activities.

“It is great when the students participate freely. It is obvious they are enjoying the learning process and makes the job of us facilitators so much more enjoyable and satisfying. On the E-FacT’s part, it tries to make the learning experience as interesting and fulfilling as possible,” said Khairul.

He gave the example of the involvement of military and police personnel, who helped conduct various activities to make the camp more engaging.

“They made a great difference, and helped reinforce the values of self-discipline and responsibility as youth and students,” said Khairul, who also thanked the teachers of the school for their participation and support.
