Curtin Sarawak’s Open Day activities promise fun time for the public

Miri – 31 March, 2009 – A wide variety of activities for the public have been lined up for Curtin Sarawak’s 10th Anniversary Curtin Open Day this Saturday. Held to commemorate Curtin Sarawak’s tenth anniversary, the day-long event at the university campus in Senadin promises lots of fun and festivities in a real carnival atmosphere.

Among the activities is the ‘Miri Open Dance Competition’, a collaborative effort between the university’s City Dance Club and Student Council. Open to the public as well as students of the university, the competition will see groups of between three and six dancers competing for cash prizes amounting to RM500 for the winning team, and RM300 and RM200 for the first and second runner-up teams respectively.

Other activities scheduled between 10.00 am and 8.00 pm will include an official launch, live band performances, a beatbox performance, and cheerleading, shuffle, salsa, line and ethnic dances, as well as a dance performance by children.

Students and staff of Curtin Sarawak will also show off their musical and modelling talents in a ‘Curtin Idol’ singing competition and ‘Mr & Miss Curtin’ pageant. A hairstyling show by the award-winning Alan Inspiration Salon is also on the cards, and radio deejays Navsta and Eric of TraXX-fm’s popular ‘Wake Up Show’ are expected to fly in from Kuala Lumpur to be a part of the fun and festivities. To end the event literally with a bang, there will be a fireworks display at 8.00 pm.

For those who have yet to visit Curtin Sarawak’s campus, the 10th Anniversary Curtin Open Day offers a great opportunity to tour the campus and gain an insight into university life. Curtin Sarawak’s various schools will showcase their facilities, academic programmes and activities through innovative displays and demonstrations and there will also be a Future Students Booth where prospective students can obtain information and make informed decisions about academic programmes. Visitors are encouraged to visit all the booths and redeem mystery gifts at designated ‘checkpoints’.

In addition to collecting mystery gifts, visitors will get the chance to win attractive lucky draw prizes, including hotel, hair salon and spa vouchers, as well as a tour package to Mulu and a return airticket to Perth, Australia.

They will also get to indulge in a variety of food and beverages sold at stalls operated by the various student clubs, local eateries like Delifrance, and the Miri Marriott Resort & Spa. Other stalls will offer retail items, handicrafts, games and more. Purchases at student-operated stalls will be by cash coupons while purchases at other stalls will be on cash terms.

Other attractions on the day will include a Hobby Corner where visitors can view displays of intricate patchwork and demonstrations on patchwork-making, Chinese art and calligraphy, paper-cutting and hobby toys such as assembly-kit robots. There will also be a Charity & Community Corner where charitable and non-governmental organisations will operate stalls for fund-raising and awareness campaigns. In addition, there will be a blood donation drive during the event, which the public is encouraged to support wholeheartedly.

A huge draw for children will be the Kids’ Corner where children’s activities such games, sand art, fan colouring, face-painting, a colouring competition, bouncy castle and cartoon character mascots will be featured. Another draw for both children and adults will be a radio-controlled helicopter and seaplane demonstration by RC Hobby Station. Visitors will get to see the helicopters and seaplanes in flight as well as try their hand on a flight simulator at the RC Hobby Station booth, where radio-controlled aircraft, parts and accessories will also be showcased and sold.
