Curtin Volunteers! Golden Child fundraising charity event to support Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society

Miri – 30 October 2009 – Curtin Volunteers! Sarawak Chapter, Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak)’s student volunteer group, is organising a ‘Golden Child’ fundraising event in aid of the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) on 31 October 2009.

Taking place from 9 am to 5 pm on the ground floor of the new wing at Bintang Megamall, the event will take on a Halloween theme with related games and attractive prizes to be won. At the same time, Curtin Volunteers! will be collecting cash donations from the public, which is urged to lend its full support to this very worthy cause.

With the mission of ‘bringing hope to children with cancer,’ the SCCS is a non-profit voluntary organisation dedicated to the relief and care of Malaysian children suffering from cancer and their immediate families. It also works towards the advancement of research and public education on the prevention, control, diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer.

As the major volunteer organisation at Curtin Sarawak, Curtin Volunteers! Sarawak Chapter has held annual fund-raising events to support various charitable organisations, including the Miri Old Folks Home, Methodist Children’s Home, Lembaga Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim Sarawak (PERYATIM), the Miri Centre for the Blind, and the Palliative Care Association of Miri.

This year, Curtin Volunteers! Sarawak Chapter decided to renew its commitment to support local charitable causes by lending a helping hand to the SCCS.

Curtin Volunteers! Sarawak Chapter President George Ong Jun Chong, said, “Both Curtin Volunteers! and the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society look forward to a successful event full of fun and merriment this weekend. We invite everyone to come and give their support for the cause and have a great time partaking in the fun activities we have lined up.”

Curtin Volunteers! (CV!) Sarawak Chapter is a student-run, non-profit organisation of Curtin Sarawak consisting of students and staff committed to supporting the community in the spirit of volunteerism. Since its formation in 2002, CV! has been actively involved in a variety of community service activities and programmes.

The Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) is a non-profit voluntary organisation formed on 26 September 1999 by a group of parents of children with cancer to discover ways in which they could help each other and their children. Formally registered on 26 November 2001, SCCS has expanded its role to include provision of financial and emotional support, accommodation for outstation families, and treatment facilities due to the incidence of new cases of childhood cancer which reaches 60 to 70 patients a year. As more children began to survive with improved treatment techniques, public education about childhood cancer, quality of life and future prospects for children with cancer were recognised as increasingly important. From the initial group of a few concerned parents, the Society’s membership has now grown to include people from all over Sarawak who share the Society’s aims and concerns.
