Curtin’s latest global ranking puts Curtin Malaysia at the forefront of globally-ranked tertiary institutions in Borneo

Miri – 24 May 2019 – Curtin University’s jumping into the world’s top 300 universities, according to the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2019 released last week, puts Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) clearly at the forefront of globally-ranked tertiary institutions in Borneo.

Curtin has been ranked 284th in the world, an improvement of 35 places, in the latest ranking, which measures university performance based on scientific impact and collaboration across almost 1,000 major universities worldwide.

Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowksi said Curtin Malaysia is proud of this significant achievement, being a key contributor to Curtin University’s strong research performance as its largest international campus and global hub in Asia.

“We are proud to be able to play a key role in expanding Curtin’s expanding global reputation and educational and research footprint in the region, particularly here in Borneo where our research activities and collaborations are making significant impact on local industries and the community,” Professor Mienczakowski said.

He added that Curtin Malaysia’s already strong research activities within its faculties, the Curtin Malaysia Research Institute (CMRI), its multi-disciplinary research arm; the Curtin Malaysia Highway Infrastructure Research and Innovation Hub (CHIRI) focused on innovations in road and highway construction; and government-funded Pilot Plant Facility for biotechnological research will soon be further bolstered by new research hubs and a new Engineering Research Laboratory, as well as a planned Digital Centre for Excellence.

Curtin University Vice-chancellor Professor Deborah Terry also expressed delight in the ranking, saying it is an outstanding result and demonstrates the university’s commitment to scientific collaboration and making an impact through scientific research that makes a real difference to people’s lives.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2019 ranks impact and collaboration according to the size of research publication output of all sciences for the period of 2014 to 2017. The global ranking is based on data from Web of Science, compiled by Clarivate Analytics.

Last November, Curtin jumped into the world’s top 250 universities in another prestigious research ranking, the 2018-19 University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), which measures the world’s top 2,500 universities. The university rose to the global ranking of 249, up from 272 in 2017, and remained ninth in Australia for the fifth year in a row.

Curtin is Western Australia’s largest university and is globally recognised for its strong connections with industry, high-impact research and wide range of innovative courses. It has built a reputation around innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit, being at the forefront of many high-profile research projects in astronomy, biosciences, economics, mining and information technology.

Curtin’s strong global reputation has seen it rise up the international university rankings in recent years. It is now ranked in the top one per cent of universities worldwide in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2018 and has risen to 250 in the world on the QS World University Ranking 2018-19. It is also ranked 20th globally for universities under the age of 50 in the QS World University Rankings 2019 and received a five-star overall excellence rating in the QS Stars rating.

In addition, Curtin’s global focus has resulted in it being ranked one of the world’s most international universities, and the second-most international university in Australia, in 2016 by Times Higher Education.

During an event to mark Curtin Malaysia’s 20th anniversary recently, Professor Terry said that Curtin is strengthening its presence around the Indian Ocean Rim through new campuses in Dubai and Mauritius that join its international campuses in Malaysia and Singapore and a long standing partnership in Sri Lanka.

With over 4,000 students from over 50 different countries and internationally-recruited staff from some 15 countries strengthening its global focus, Curtin Malaysia offers an international and cross-cultural learning environment in a unique Malaysian setting.

Other than location and the fact that it charges very affordable Malaysian fees for courses that are identical to those offered by Curtin in Australia, students at Curtin Malaysia get the same education and learning experience as their counterparts at the main campus in Perth. They can also choose to study part of their courses, complete their undergraduate degrees, or undertake a further degree at another Curtin campus. Upon graduation, they will join an active network of over 230,000 Curtin alumni spread across the world.
