Form Five students in Kuching, Sibu and Kota Kinabalu to participate in Curtin Sarawak’s SPM Workshops

Miri – 13 October 2009 – Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is holding a series of free SPM Workshops for Form Five students in Kuching, Sibu and Kota Kinabalu to help them prepare for the upcoming SPM examination. The workshop in Kuching will be on 17 October 2009, followed by similar workshops in Sibu and Kota Kinabalu on 18 October and 23 October 2009 respectively.

As the response has been good and limited spaces remain, students interested to participate in the workshops are encouraged to register with Curtin Sarawak’s Marketing Department as soon as possible. They can contact the following student recruitment officers: Michael Kong at 013-8018656 (for workshops in Kuching and Sibu) and Elaine Tiong at 019-8856256 (for workshop in Kota Kinabalu).

As a leading educational institution in East Malaysia with vast experience in providing academic support and guidance, Curtin Sarawak aims to help the students develop their academic skills and alleviate as much as possible the anxiety and guesswork that comes with preparing for examinations.

With a catchy ‘SPM: Lights, Camera, Action!’ theme and facilitated by highly-experienced, award-winning lecturer Terrance Tan of Curtin Sarawak’s School of Engineering and Science, the first workshop (for all streams) will be held between 2 pm and 4 pm at the Grand Continental Hotel in Kuching on 17 October 2009.

The second workshop, in Sibu and also for all streams, will be from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Premier Hotel on 18 October 2009.

The workshop in Kota Kinabalu on 23 October 2009, meanwhile, will be held from 1 pm to 3 pm for the Science streams and 3 pm to 5 pm for the Arts streams at the Tang Dynasty Hotel in Kota Kinabalu.

According to Curtin Sarawak student recruitment officer Michael Kong, the workshops are set to give the students a spirited boost to face the SPM, as well as give them an opportunity to gain valuable insights from Tan, an inspiring lecturer and graduate of Imperial College London who has successfully motivated his students to not only excel in their studies, but also win in state and national-level competitions.

Tan has been recognised by Curtin University and students of Curtin Sarawak for excellence and innovation in teaching, winning Curtin’s Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award in 2008 and Student Choice Award for three consecutive years. He is very passionate about teaching and the development of students as individuals and believes learning should be inspiring and thought-provoking and, most of all, enjoyable and fulfilling.
