Job-seekers can connect with employers during Curtin Malaysia Careers Fair 2021 online from today

Miri – 4 October 2021 – Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the hugely popular annual Curtin Malaysia Careers Fair hosted by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is being held as a virtual event for the second year starting today.

However, the university is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the 10-day fair until 15 October 2021 meets its objectives of providing, in collaboration with its industry partners, internship and career opportunities for its students, new graduates and alumni, as well as other job-seekers in the local community.

The careers fair has attracted the participation of 52 companies in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia, and participants will be able to connect with them through the event’s online platform and a series of webinars and special ‘Meet the Employers’ online forums throughout the 10 days.

The careers fair was launched virtually by Curtin Malaysia’s Interim Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Vincent Lee Chieng Chen on behalf of Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig via a Facebook live stream today.

In his speech delivered by Professor Lee, Professor Leunig said the global pandemic and the fact that the careers fair is a virtual event should not deter the university from its commitment to working with industry and giving its current students, new graduates and alumni, as well other job-seekers in the community, opportunities to secure internships and job placements.

“As part of a global university and active community player, Curtin Malaysia’s challenge and opportunity is to not only to help create a well-educated and well-trained workforce that can rise to competition from around the world, but also ensure that young people can flourish, have the opportunity to unleash their potential, and grasp whatever career opportunities come their way,” he said.

“However, institutions like Curtin Malaysia cannot work alone in grooming the talents for the future. Stakeholders in industry have an important role to play as well, in providing internship opportunities for young people to supplement and enrich their studies, giving them exposure and first-hand experience of the various professions, and job opportunities when they graduate.”

He added that, as Curtin’s largest global campus and a leading tertiary institution in Malaysia, Curtin Malaysia is proud to have produced over 8,000 quality and job-ready graduates in its 22-year existence; graduates capable of working effectively across different cultures and disciplines, and making significant contributions to industry in Malaysia and across the world.

The Curtin Malaysia Careers Fair, which was formerly also known as the Curtin Malaysia Internship and Placement Fair, has been one of Curtin Malaysia’s largest and most anticipated annual events for many years, attracting large numbers of employers and job-seekers. It has been successful in placing thousands of Curtin Malaysia students and graduates in company internship and graduate programmes, and both full-time and part-time employment, for many years.

The 52 companies participating this year is comparable to the 54 last year, which represents about a 50 per cent increase in employer participation over 2019 when it was a physical event. Over 200 job vacancies and over 100 internship and graduate programme openings are being offered by the employers this year, showing that the job market is still very buoyant despite the COVIID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the opportunity to engage with the employers, participants will also get to join free online forums discussing career and workplace issues with industry speakers. The first sessions on 5 October will feature Dr. Adeline Wong from Curtin Malaysia and Serge Vincent Jean from ALECA Sdn. Bhd., who will talk about changes in the workplace and how to adapt and be resilient in the face of change. On 14 October, forums with Dr. Wong, Voon Kai Foo from Turcomp BMB Sdn. Bhd, and Abdul Raof Latiff from DBS Bank (Labuan) Malaysia will discuss building trust and respect in the workplace.

There will also be a series of ‘Meet the Employers’ sessions where participants can learn more about selected companies from their executives and staff. From 4 to 7 October, the sessions will be hosted by Grant Thorton Malaysia PLT, Bukit Vista (Indonesia), Turcomp BMB Sdn. Bhd., Finexus Sdn. Bhd., Esker Document Automation (M) Sdn. Bhd. and Public Bank Bhd. From 11 to 15 October, the sessions will be hosted by Vitrox Corporation Bhd., Intel Malaysia, CPA Australia PLT, Schneider Electric (Malaysia) Sdn.
