Learn more about civil and construction engineering from Curtin alumni

Miri – 25 February 2021 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is continuing with its popular ‘Going Places with a Curtin Degree’ Live Webinar Series with a new segment focused on civil and construction engineering studies. It will feature three Curtin Malaysia alumni who have made their mark in the civil and construction engineering industries in Malaysia and Singapore.

The webinar, the sixth in the series in collaboration with the Curtin University Alumni Malaysia Chapter, will be streamed live for public viewing on Facebook Live at https://bit.ly/CurtinLiveWebinarP6 this Saturday, 27 February 2021, from 2pm to 3.30pm (UTC/GMT +8).

The alumni panellists will comprise Bachelor of Engineering (BEng.) in Civil and Construction Engineering graduates Ngu Ung Chai, Ling Teck Ping and Bryan Chin. Viewers will be able to find out from them what inspired them to choose their particular career paths, the challenges they faced, and how a Curtin education and degree helped them to achieve success.

Ngu, who graduated in 2011, started his career with S Frame Buildtech Sdn. Bhd. as an engineer in December of that year, and worked his way up to the top management of the company in 10 years. S Frame Buildtech, which is based in Bintulu, Sarawak, specialises in Light Gauge Cold Formed Steel Framing (LGSF) systems, also known as S Frame systems. The company is both the pioneer and purveyor of LGSF construction for residential and commercial buildings in Malaysia.

Under Ngu’s leadership, S Frame Buildtech ventured into the construction and trading industry with a focus on government and local authority projects, and the trading of green and innovative building materials. He aims to make S Frame Buildtech a one-stop building solutions provider where feasibility study, design, planning, building materials supply and construction needs are seamlessly met.

Ling graduated in 2019 and is now a civil engineer with Sepakat Setia Perunding Sdn. Bhd. in Selangor, one of the largest multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firms in Malaysia serving both the public and private sectors. As an engineer with the company, he has been fortunate to be part of mega projects such as the Electrified Double Track Project and MRT in Kuala Lumpur.

Ling is actively involved in engineering societies and is a committee member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia – Young Engineer Section (IEM-YES). As part of IEM-YES, he has attended a number of international conferences and organised several events for its members.

Chin, meanwhile, graduated in 2009 and is currently Assistant Technical Manager with Lum Chang Building Contractor Pte. Ltd. in Singapore. He has approximately 12 years of progressive experience in the engineering and construction fields, being involved in different civil and infrastructure works, particularly viaducts design and construction.

His experience has included interpreting technical engineering specifics, and proactive and flexible approaches to supporting a wide array of engineering solutions from permanent design works to temporary design works. Chin is also a Built Environment Young Leader and graduate of the first batch of the iBuildSG LEAD Horizon Programme.

The webinar will be hosted by Curtin alumnus and Curtin University Alumni Malaysia Chapter committee member Julius Tan, while Associate Professor Tang Fu Ee of Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Civil & Construction Engineering, who is also its Faculty of Engineering & Science’s Associate Dean of Learning & Teaching, will be the moderator.

Previous segments in the ‘Going Places with a Curtin Degree’ Live Webinar Series featured alumni from both Curtin’s Malaysia and Perth campuses who are pursuing successful careers within Malaysia and internationally – testimonies that a Curtin education and degree can indeed take one places. Their experiences have proven that Curtin degrees are highly regarded, and Curtin graduates are highly sought after, by employers. Hosts have included both Curtin alumni and current students of Curtin Malaysia.

Curtin alumni who wish to connect with fellow alumni, as well as those interested to pursue Curtin degrees at Curtin Malaysia, are welcome to join. Participation is free and they stand the chance to win exclusive Curtin merchandise during the session.
