Naim Land – Curtin Sarawak Short Video Competition winners receive prizes

Miri – 17 June 2013 – A short video entitled ‘Why High Rise Home’ by a group of students from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Perak has won the grand prize in the inaugural Naim Land – Curtin Sarawak Short Video Competition jointly organised by Naim Land Sendirian Berhad and Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak).

The students comprising Abdul Hadi bin Abdul Hamid, Loo Chin Lin, Sarah Lois Dorai, Muhammad Haikal bin Abdul Rahman and Goh Yun Chin produced a video shot in Penang promoting the benefits of high-rise living from the perspective of five individuals. Their effort won them a RM2,000 cash prize, trophy and certificates of participation.

Placed second was a video called ‘In A Day’ by a group of Curtin Sarawak students comprising Fazar Ria Muneera binte Safree Zainudin, Jonathan Ajeng John and Muhammad Izzat Jailani. They won RM1,000 in addition to a trophy and certificates of participation.

‘In A Day’ shows three individuals sharing a luxurious high-rise apartment, each with in a different stage of life. The high-rise property they live in adequately caters to their differing lifestyles and they find living there most convenient, secure and fun.

Third-place winners Daniel Kong Cheng Han, Ting Kee Heng, Ferguson Narutu anak Nobel, Benedict Su Kwong Hu, Then Sze Chuen, Tang Ying Ming, Jenifer Kong Sing Ing, Teng Khang Jin, Mohd. Fazrul bin Johari, Basil Teo Shung Say, Melanie Lim Yiat Wen and Clement Akihiro Sim Sheng Hong from Miri won RM500 and similar trophies and certificates.

Their entry entitled ‘My Dream High Rise Home’ tells a tale of a filial son who dreams of buying his parents a high-rise home and works hard to achieve his ambition. The video also won the People’s Choice Award, garnering the highest number of YouTube likes, as well as the Best Script and Best Actor awards. Meanwhile, ‘In A Day’ won the Best Director Award.

The judging was carried out by a panel of judges comprising Dr. N.V. Prasad, Associate Professor in the Film & Broadcasting Section, School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia, who has vast experience in producing documentaries, corporate videos and short films; Uzair Sawal, a freelance television producer, music video director and writer; Juliana Yong, former screen and media studies technical officer and lecturer and owner of her own production house; Leong Jee Van; Naim Land’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer – Property; and  Ngu Ik Ying, Head of the Department of Media, Culture and Communication and media lecturer at Curtin Sarawak.

The second and third-placed teams received their prizes at a prize presentation ceremony at the Naim Land Sales Office here on Saturday. Presenting the prizes were Naim Land’s General Manager, Miri Operations Michael Ting, and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Ir. Yudi Samyudia and Corporate Communications Manager Nicholas Leong of Curtin Sarawak. Professor Samyudia accepted the grand prize on behalf of the first place winners.

Presenting the People’s Choice Award was Naim Land’s Senior General Manager, Sales and Marketing Alice Ting, while Ngu presented the Best Script, Best Actor and Best Director awards.

The competition themed ‘My Dream High-rise Home’ was held from 18 January to 15 April 2013. It was open to residents of Malaysia and amateur video makers or first-timers with an interest in short video making or script-writing were encouraged to participate.

The competition’s objectives included gauging the community’s view as to what constitutes ideal high-rise living, educating the public on the benefits of high-rise living, as well as exposing the public to the art of video production and providing an exciting platform for local talents to demonstrate their talent and creativity.

Participants were required to produce video clips of no more than five minutes on their ideal high-rise home and the benefits of high-rise living. The videos were to appeal to both young urbanites attracted to high-rise living in apartments or condominiums, as well as families looking to own safe, convenient and tastefully designed high-rise homes.
