Professor Michael Cloke is Curtin Sarawak’s new Dean, School of Engineering and Science
Posted date:Miri – 5 September 2013 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) has appointed Professor Michael Cloke as its new Dean of School of Engineering and Science with effect from 2 September 2013.
Professor Cloke replaces Professor Ir. Yudi Samyudia, who was promoted to the position of Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor in January this year following four years as the School’s Dean. In the interim, Associate Professor Ir. Lau Hieng Ho of the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering was the acting Dean.
A British national, Professor Cloke brings to the position a wealth of university experience spanning some 30 years. He has held senior academic and administrative positions in leading institutions of higher learning in the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Brunei. Prior to this appointment, Professor Cloke was the Dean of Engineering at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus and Academic Advisor to the Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Technology Brunei.
Professor Cloke is a Chartered Engineer (UK) and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, United Kingdom.
He graduated with a BSc and PhD from the University of Nottingham. He worked in industry for eight years after graduating with his first degree, and then joined the University of Nottingham as a lecturer.
His teaching interests cover a wide range in Chemical Engineering including: Fluid Dynamics; Thermodynamics; Engineering Materials and Engineering Management. His research is mainly related to coal uilisation and power generation and he has published many research papers in journals and refereed conferences.
Professor Cloke’s aims as the new Dean of the School of Engineering and Science include continuing the development of the strength and quality in the degree programmes and to significantly increase the research of the School.
Professor Samyudia, meanwhile, commented, “I believe that with his vast experience in the United Kingdom and Malaysia, both as an academic and industrial practitioner, Professor Cloke’s leadership of the School of Engineering and Science will result in our engineering and science programmes being further strengthened through increased research intensity and continued accreditation by the relevant professional bodies.”
