ScareFest and Fitness Fab Festival at Curtin Sarawak get overwhelming response

Miri – 8 November 2013 – Two recent student-organised charity events at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) received overwhelming response from students of the university, as well as members of the public.

They were the ScareFest on 11 October and Fitness Fab Festival on 12 October 2013 organised by the Curtin Sarawak Student Council in aid of the Sarawak Family Planning Association and Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group.

ScareFest was a Halloween-themed festival featuring horror movie screenings, Human vs. Zombies competition, flash mob and haunted house, as well as a Cosplay Café by the university’s Curtin Japan Pop Culture Club, Scarefest costume contest, pumpkin carving contest and costume party.

The highlight of the event was a live performance by award-winning Malaysian rock band Estranged. The opening acts prior to their performance were local groups Ana and The Scene, Blue Maggie, Actual Size, The Mantra, Curtin Art and Dance Club, MYY Hustle and Oil Town Hip Hop.

Sponsors for the event were Curtin Sarawak’s University Life Department, Mega Hotel, ParkCity Everly Hotel Miri and Imperial Hotel, and participating vendors included Siong Lee Sdn. Bhd., T4, Desserts, Sao Paulo Coffee, Magic Beauty Studio and Big D Burger.

Event organiser Sam Tze Mun said the event was highly successful due to the positive response from the crowd of over 500 who came from Miri and as far as Bintulu, Brunei and Kota Kinabalu. The event crew of some 50 volunteers also played a critical role in its success.

He added that the students enjoyed the Halloween theme and the majority of them came dressed in Halloween costumes.

The Fitness Fab Festival, meanwhile, was held in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month which is marked throughout the world each October. It was aimed at raising awareness of breast cancer and the need to live a healthy lifestyle.

The highlights if the event were workouts by TAGS Spine & Joint Specialists (Miri) and TLD Dance Studio, a yoga session by Alex Yoga and Zumba by Dance Fusion. It also featured exhibition booths by health and fitness experts, talks by a specialist from TAGS and the radiology manager of Columbia Asia Hospital Miri, and a sharing session with a breast cancer survivor.

According to organising chairperson Tanya Muda, the event attracted huge crowds throughout the day and many walked away with a greater awareness of breast and cervical cancer and the necessity to stay fit and healthy.

Funds raised from both events amounting to RM10,744.00 was handed over to the two charities during the Fitness Fab Festival.
