School of Engineering Team champs in Curtin Sarawak bowling tournament

Miri – 26 May, 2009 – Staff of Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) took time off from their busy schedules for a bit of fun and camaraderie at their first inter-department bowling tournament recently. Emerging overall champions in the tournament was the School of Engineering’s Team 1, beating 17 other teams for the title.

The tournament held at Mega Lane East Bowling Centre at Bintang Plaza Megamall was organised by the university’s Human Resources Department and saw 72 staff members participating in male and female categories.

According to organising chairman Michael Leo, the tournament was part of Curtin Sarawak’s ongoing campaign to build teamwork and a strong corporate culture amongst its staff through regular social and sports activities, and also to promote the value of healthy and active lifestyles.

“It is a great way for our academic and professional staff to get together for a bit of friendly competition and fun,” said Michael, adding that the response to the tournament was exceptionally good, drawing participation from virtually all of the university’s departments and schools.

Michael also remarked that a number of hidden sports talents were uncovered during the tournament. “We had a few ace bowlers amongst the participants, which came as quite a surprise,” he said.

The winning School of Engineering Team 1 comprising Dr Yudi Samyudia, Bejay Ugon, Tay Chen Lim and Mahadie Mokhtar edged out the Marketing Department and ICT Department teams, which came in second and third respectively, for the top spot.

Eileen Foong of the Marketing Department was declared best player in the ladies category, while Nicholas Lau, also of the Marketing Department, was best player in the men’s category.
