SMK Lopeng Tengah Pre-University Club visits Curtin Sarawak

Miri, 5 March 2009 – 26 sixth formers of SMK Lopeng Tengah paid Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia an educational visit recently. They were members of the school’s Pre-University Club and the visit was one of their co-curricular activities to familiarise themselves with the facilities and academic programmes available at Curtin Sarawak, the first international university to be established in Sarawak.

The group was welcomed by staff of Curtin Sarawak’s Corporate Communications, Marketing and Student Services Departments, who gave them a briefing on various aspects of the university. Student Recruitment Officer Felecia Ngalih briefed them on the academic courses offered at the university, which range from foundation courses in commerce arts, engineering and science, and diploma courses in process plant technology and business, to degree courses in commerce, business administration, arts, engineering, science and technology, as well as postgraduate courses in various fields.

Felecia highlighted the importance of English language competency for enrollment in Curtin Sarawak. As all programmes are conducted in English, it is imperative that students have a good command of the language. Those who do not meet the English language requirements can enroll in the university’s Intensive English Programme or IEP, which has proven very successful in preparing students for entry into their desired course of study.

The students were also briefed on financial aid available to students at Curtin Sarawak by Loans & Scholarships Officer Marianne Masli. Marianne highlighted the Western Australian Premier’s Scholarship which is awarded by the government of Western Australia to five Curtin Sarawak students each year to complete their studies at Curtin University of Technology’s main campus in Perth. “The scholarship is special as it is granted exclusively to eligible students of Curtin Sarawak. If you are one of the five, you needn’t worry about finances so long as you continue to do well in your studies,” she said.

A tour of the university’s state-of-the-art campus followed the briefing. They were shown the various schools and research facilities, teaching and learning facilities, as well as the wide range of campus facilities for students, such as the ICT labs, library, cafeteria and bookshop.
