Upper six students learn more about Curtin Sarawak

Miri – 12 July, 2010 – 61 upper sixth formers of SMK Luar Bandar, Miri, recently visited Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) to learn more about the university and the opportunities if offers for their further studies.

The students were welcomed on arrival by staff of the Student Recruitment and Corporate Communications Departments and were later briefed by student recruitment officer Michael Kong on various aspects of the university, including its academic programmes, entry requirements, scholarships and financial aid, and teaching and learning facilities.

Kong briefed them on the entire range of programmes available, from pre-university courses in commerce and art, engineering and science, and diploma courses in process plant technology, occupational health and safety, and business; to degree courses in arts (mass communication), commerce, business engineering, science and technology, as well as postgraduate programmes in various fields.

“Curtin Sarawak is renowned for its links with industry and business, and for the practical and applied nature of its courses. As a result, our students receive a diverse, challenging and rewarding education grounded in the real world, and are job-ready when they graduate,” said Kong.

He highlighted the importance of English language competency for enrolment at Curtin Sarawak as all its programmes are conducted in English. However, he said those who do not meet the language requirements need not despair as they can enrol in the Intensive English Programme (IEP), which has proven very successful in preparing students for entry into their desired programmes of study.

Kong explained that Curtin Sarawak was a full-fledged offshore campus of Curtin University and was not running twinning programmes like certain institutions of higher learning.

“Every aspect of the academic programmes here at Curtin Sarawak is identical to those offered at our main Bentley Campus in Perth. Furthermore, degrees earned here are awarded directly by the Bentley Campus,” he said.

According to Kong, Curtin Sarawak wants its students to get the most out of their education and make their experience productive and fun by providing the best possible facilities and services one would expect from Curtin’s first and largest international branch campus.

Student facilities include The Learning Centre, library, computing facilities, counselling service, a choice of food and beverage outlets, health services, public transport, banking facilities, shops, secure student housing, as well as a modern multi-purpose health, recreation and events centre.

In addition, Curtin Sarawak offers a vibrant campus lifestyle with a mix of academic support services and exciting social events, as well as a unique international and cross-cultural learning environment with students from more than 40 countries.
