Curtin Alumni celebrates Australia Day in Miri

Thursday, 24 January 2008 – Curtin Alumni East Malaysian Chapter will be organising Australia Day on 26 January 2008 in Grand Palace Hotel at 6.30pm to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being an Australian.

The commemorative event will be officiated by Yang Berhormat Dr. Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure and Communication, Sarawak and Chairman, Management Board, Curtin Sarawak Malaysia.

As an Australian university, Curtin University of Technology is proud to be part of the national day celebration spreading the Australian culture amongst the Curtin graduate and the Miri community.

Australia Day commemorates the establishment of a settlement and penal colony at Port Jackson, Sydney by Captain Arthur Phillip who later became the first Governer.

Only since 1994, Australia Day was celebrated nationwide in Australia as a public holiday every year on the 26th of January. It took until 1935 for all Australian states and territories to use the name ‘Australia Day’.

Australia is a diverse nation with people from various backgrounds living together harmoniously and it is the diversity that makes Australia unique and different from others. It symbolises the day when Australians celebrate their nationhood.
