Curtin Sarawak accounting graduate receives MICPA award
Posted date:Miri – 24 November 2016 – Eleanor Wong Shi Ee, a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) graduate of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), is among 11 Malaysian graduates who were conferred the prestigious 2015 Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) Excellence Award for Best Accounting Graduate recently.
Wong, who is currently working for an international bank, received the award in recognition of her outstanding academic performance, exemplary leadership qualities and desire for excellence at an awards ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur recently.
She was nominated for the award by her alma mater, the Curtin Sarawak Faculty of Business, and selected from among nominees from both public and private universities in the country.
The other award winners were from Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Multimedia University, International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Victoria University (Sunway College), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.
An outstanding student, Wong not only performed well academically but was also involved in extra-curricular activities such as the Curtin Survivor Camp, AIESEC Global Citizen Programme, MICPA-ICAA (Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia) Business Challenge, ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) Convention and CPA (Certified Practising Accountants) workshops.
In addition, she was a welfare sub-council member of Curtin Sarawak’s Student Council from 2013 to 2015, a Curtin Sarawak Scholarship holder for three consecutive years, and previously underwent an internship with KPMG Malaysia.
In congratulating Wong, Head of the Curtin Sarawak Faculty of Business’ Department of Accounting, Dr Lynn Ling Yew Hua, expressed her utmost satisfaction with Wong’s achievements during her years at Curtin Sarawak and wished her all the best in her career.
Dr Ling also commented that Wong joins the ranks of two other Curtin Sarawak alumni, Lee Syin Kit and Ling Yi Qing, who won the same award in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
Launched in 1992, the MICPA Excellence Award for Best Accounting Graduate represents part of the Institute’s continued commitment to promote accountancy as a career. The award recognises high-achieving accounting graduates from MICPA-accredited universities who have achieved excellence in the MICPA-CAANZ (Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand) Programme, their extra-curricular activities and respective careers, as well as in demonstrating exemplary personal traits.
MICPA was established in 1958 and is the only Malaysian-grown professional accounting body. Its MICPA-CAANZ Programme is a dual qualification programme which grants its graduates memberships with both MICPA and CAANZ, carrying the titles ‘Certified Public Accountant, Malaysia’, and ‘Chartered Accountant, Australia and New Zealand’.
Graduates also obtain the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) Passport which provides them with membership support and recognition from 10 premier accounting bodies worldwide. MICPA-CAANZ professionals are trained and equipped with strong application and problem-solving skills which make them relevant and trusted advisors.
Curtin’s Bachelor of Commerce offers a large range of business specialisations, including accounting and finance single and double majors. It is designed to help students gain the theory and practical skills needed to be ready for the job market.
