Fruitful experience for Curtin Sarawak students attending IEEE event

Miri – 30 November 2016  It was a fruitful experience for three representatives of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) attending the recent IEEE Malaysia Student Congress 2016 as they got to meet and share ideas with members of other IEEE student branches in Malaysia.

Vice-President Kong Sheng How and Heads of Community Outreach Ng Kay Li and Bong Chu Jun were among 150 delegates from various IEEE student branches attending the congress organised by the IEEE Malaysia Section at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) in Kuala Lumpur.

Among those present were Vice-Chancellor of APU Professor Ron Edwards, Chair of IEEE Malaysia Section Dr. Zuhaina Zakaria and Chair of IEEE Malaysia Student Activity Dr. Susthitha Menon.

The congress included a talk on IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) by Curtin Sarawak alumnus and former President of IEEE Student Branch of Curtin Sarawak Saaveethya Sivakumar and the soft launching of the WIE Student Network in Malaysia. Saaveethya is currently the Chair of the WIE Student Network while Ng is its newly appointed Vice Chair.

It also featured other activities such as contests and talks on career, entrepreneurship, healthy lifestyles and personal safety.

A prize-giving ceremony was held at the end of the congress where the IEEE Student Branch of Curtin Sarawak was placed third in the ‘IEEE Malaysia Exemplary Student Branch Awards’. It also placed second in the ‘IEEE Collabratec Student Branch Contest’ and third in the ‘Infographic Contest’.

Commenting on his experience at the congress, Kong said it was well organised and allowed members to meet and exchange information. It also inspired him to further develop his leadership skills and bring the IEEE Student Branch of Curtin Sarawak to greater heights, including through more participation in national and international events.

Bong, meanwhile, opined that by attending the congress, she felt more engaged with the IEEE as an organisation, while Ng said the congress was an excellent platform for the student branches to network and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The IEEE Student Branch of Curtin Sarawak was established in 2008 and currently has about 120 members. To learn more about them, visit www.facebook.com/CurtinSarawak.IEEE or email ieee.curtinsarawak@gmail.com.
