Curtin Sarawak Open Day gets support of Miri City Council
Posted date:Miri – 14 September 2016 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) gladly welcomes the continued support of the Miri City Council for its annual Curtin Sarawak Open Day on 8 October 2016.
This was conveyed by members of the Curtin Sarawak Open Day Committee led by organising chairman and Curtin Sarawak Corporate Communications Manager Nicholas Leong during a courtesy visit to Miri Mayor Adam Yii recently. Also present was Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak, Professor Beena Giridharan.
This year’s event will be the university’s tenth Open Day and the Miri City Council is supporting it as its main event partner for the seventh consecutive year.
In addition to thanking the city council for its support, which includes providing administrative, promotional and logistical support, Leong briefed the mayor on preparations for the event which is expected to draw an estimated 8,000 visitors, including several hundred secondary school students from Miri and neighbouring towns.
Among the event’s key highlights will be a series of competitions for teams from secondary schools run by the various faculties and areas of the university. They are the ‘Curtin Ultimate Croc Challenge’, an electronics design competition; ‘Business Genius Challenge’, a business knowledge quiz; and ‘So You Think You Can Spell?’, a spelling challenge.
14 teams have signed up for the Curtin Ultimate Croc Challenge and another 14 teams for the spelling challenge, whereas the Business Genius Challenge will see nine teams competing, including a team from Sabah.
In addition, there will be the ‘Young Innovate Miri’, another electronics design competition involving over 30 teams, and the semi-finals and finals of the Curtin Gaming Championship, a gaming competition featuring FIFA and DOTA 2 in which some 20 teams are expected to participate.
‘Young Innovate Miri’ is part of the nationwide ‘Young Innovate’ programme and national embedded system design competition. The top three teams in the Miri competition will represent Sarawak at the national-level competition to be held in Kuala Lumpur.
Another key attraction will be the ‘Future Students Hub’ where potential students can meet student recruitment officers, lecturers and current students and gather first-hand knowledge about courses and how to enroll in them. They can also find out more about available scholarships and financial aid and join guided tours of the campus.
Those interested to study at Curtin University’s campuses in Perth and Singapore can also enquire at the ‘Future Students Hub’ where representatives from the two sister campuses will be available to advise them.
The ‘Future Students Hub’ at the university’s Recreation & Event Centre will also include a ‘Faculty Showcase’ showcasing Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Humanities and the Curtin Sarawak Graduate School.
Visitors will get a real hands-on experience participating in experiential activities like laboratory and classroom simulations and interactive games at the showcases with interesting themes like ‘Engineer’s Land’, “Entrepreneur Hub’, ‘The Humanist’ and ‘Scholar’s Corner’. They also stand to collect interesting giveaways if they visit all the booths.
The day will also feature free entertainment, food stalls and more in a festival-like atmosphere. Each year, the event gets considerable community support and local businesses, charities and other non-governmental organisations will be among the stall operators this year, joining over 30 of Curtin Sarawak’s student clubs.
In addition, visitors can look forward to redeeming attractive door gifts and winning lucky draw prizes. Individual tickets at RM5 or booklets of ten tickets at RM50 for the redemption of door gifts and participation in the lucky draws are available from Curtin Sarawak’s Corporate Communications Department and Student Council. They will also be sold during the event. All proceeds from the sale of the tickets will go local charities participating in the Open Day.
