Curtin Sarawak organises Safety Awareness Campaign

Miri – 20 May 2016 – A two-day Safety Awareness Campaign held at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) aimed at educating attendees on possible hazard and safety issues as well as raising awareness on its causes and consequences.

The campaign was jointly organised by Curtin Sarawak’s The Library, Office of Student Affairs and Campus Security Department. Among the participating agencies were Royal Malaysia Police, National Anti-Drugs Agency, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Regional Office, Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Miri, Fire & Rescue Department Miri and National Population & Family Developmental Board.

The event featured exhibition as well as talks on personal safety, health awareness, drug abuse, internet crimes and prevention, and fire safety and fire-fighting. The opening ceremony was officiated by Curtin Sarawak’s Chief Operating Officer Kingsley Francis Charles while Dean of Teaching and Learning Associate Professor Dr Beena Giridharan delivered the opening remarks on behalf of Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski.

In his speech, Professor Mienczakowski said the campaign was a noble initiative as the safety and security of students and staff are of paramount importance.

“In our endeavour to provide a conductive learning and working environment for our students and staff, we are fully committed to promoting safety and security, along with mental health and well-being within our campus community, and have various policies and support mechanisms to address these issues,” remarked Professor Mienczakowski.
