Miri – 21 November 2016  16 members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Politeknik Brunei Student Chapter recently visited Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) at the invitation of the Curtin University Sarawak SPE Student Chapter.

The visit allowed members of the newly-established Bruneian student chapter to learn more about the activities of their counterparts at Curtin Sarawak.

Following a welcoming speech by the Curtin Sarawak student chapter’s president, Chong Yun Jia, the visitors were given a briefing on the chapter’s marketing, logistics, external affairs, welfare and membership functions.

SPE Politeknik Brunei Student Chapter Vice-President Mohammad Khairul Azmi bin Abdul Khalid reciprocated by introducing his chapter’s representatives and spoke briefly about its formation and activities.

The visit included a tour of the Curtin Sarawak campus, including its petro-physics and drilling fluid laboratories, led by Curtin Sarawak SPE Student Chapter vice-president Wong Chung Ye and associate lecturer Mian Umer Shafiq of the university’s Department of Petroleum Engineering.

Curtin Sarawak SPE Student Chapter member Ivan Lau Zheng Yao said it is good for both student chapters to share information and experiences, as well as collaborate on joint projects and activities. He added that the Curtin Sarawak chapter is always keen to establish connections with other student chapters around the world.

On behalf of the two student chapters, Lau thanked Head of the Department of Petroleum Engineering Associate Professor Sharul Sham bin Dol, advisor to the Curtin Sarawak student chapter Dr Mohamed Ali Hamid, and petroleum engineering lecturers Dr Hisham Khaled Ben Mahmud, Dr Raoof Gholami Mian Poshteh and Mian Umer Shafiq for their support towards the visit.
