Curtin Sarawak SPE Student Chapter wins international award

Miri – 31 October 2016 – For the third year in a row, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has conferred its international award upon its student chapter at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak).

The Curtin University Sarawak SPE Student Chapter is among 39 chapters around the world recognised with the Gold Standard Student Chapter Award for excellence in five categories: industry engagement, operations and planning, community involvement, professional development and innovation.

The other award recipients include the student chapters of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and higher learning institutions in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Qatar, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Venezuela.

Curtin Sarawak received the same gold standard award in 2014 while last year, it won the Outstanding Student Chapter Award.

Senior lecturer of petroleum engineering and advisor of the student chapter Dr Mohamed Ali Hamid thanked all past and current student committee members and advisors for their tireless contributions and supports.

SPE is the largest individual-member organisation serving managers, engineers, scientists and other professionals worldwide in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. Its student chapters are university-based groups of SPE student members. Presently, there are over 360 SPE student chapters worldwide.

The Curtin University Sarawak SPE Student Chapter was established in March 2013 and currently has about 200 members. It is one of only four SPE student chapters in Malaysia and the first in East Malaysia.

The chapter serves to provide its members industry exposure and networking opportunities through a variety of activities such as talks, workshops, conferences, competitions, industrial site visits, charity and sporting events and other relevant activities.

Members can also benefit from technology discussions and meet practicing professionals at SPE meetings and events, receive society sponsored scholarships and enjoy discounts on textbooks, reference books, and other society publications. In addition, they can participate in various SPE programmes, online communities and paper contests.

Since its establishment, the chapter has organised events such as the annual Curtin Engineering Symposium and week-long Petroleum Engineering Week events that provide opportunities for students from various engineering disciplines to interact with and learn from industry professionals from major oil and gas companies in the country.
