Curtin Sarawak students organise eventful week to promote civil engineering

Miri – 14 October 2016 – The recent Civil Engineering Week 2016 ended on a high note. at the campus of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) proved to be a most eventful one for the campus community.

The Civil Engineering Week is an annual event organised by the Curtin Civil Society, Curtin Sarawak’s academic club for civil and construction engineering students, to promote the field of civil engineering and career prospects in the industry.

It is also aimed at promoting camaraderie among the Curtin Civil Society committee and members and with students in other disciplines, as well as the club’s activities.

Among the highlights during the week were ‘Senior Sharing Sessions’ where senior civil engineering students from the Curtin Civil Society shared their experiences pursuing their degrees and their internships with engineering concerns with their juniors. They included postgraduate students Kok Ka Yee and Tan Yee Tong, fresh graduate Chin Mei Chuo and final-year student Yap June Yong.

The head of the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Dr Tang Fu Ee, and lecturer Carrie Ho Lee Ing also spoke to the students.

Other activities held throughout the week included engineering-based games. The ‘Breach the Dam’ game and the “Paper Tower Challenge’ was won by Jacky Wong, Chong Chen Seng, Yong Chin Leong and Franky Chong. The ‘Concrete Frisbee’ competition, meanwhile, was won by Lim Chuan Jet, Law Yi Wei and Chieng Yiew Chee.

Curtin Sarawak offers a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) course in Civil and Construction Engineering that is identical to that offered at its parent campus in Western Australia. The course is accredited by both Engineers Australia and the Board of Engineers Malaysia.

The professional and practically-oriented course, which is a comprehensive combination of civil engineering and construction engineering, has extensive support and collaboration from industry players and is highly prized by graduates and respected by professional engineers.

The quality of Curtin’s courses is assured through its strong rankings in the global university rankings. It is currently ranked in the top two percent of universities worldwide in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and ranked among the world’s top universities in six engineering subjects in the ARWU 2016 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, including a Top 50 position in Civil Engineering.
