Curtin Sarawak’s librarians organise beach-cleaning to raise environmental awareness

Miri – 29 August 2016 – The Library at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently organised an environmental awareness programme in conjunction with the current Merdeka Month.

Aimed at highlighting the importance of maintaining clean public beaches in Miri, the programme included a beach-cleaning gotong-royong at Lutong Beach which was participated by 35 volunteers from Curtin Sarawak, Miri City Council, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak Miri, National Anti-Dadah Agency and Malaysian Nature Society Miri Branch, as well as their family members.

Speaking on behalf of The Library at the start of the beach-cleaning, Assistant Librarian Maureen Ulau said Luting Beach was selected for the activity as it is one of the most popular beaches for recreation in Miri.

She added that it is crucial to care for the environment and hoped that the beach-cleaning activity would deliver a strong message to the community to maintain the cleanliness of our beaches and public places. She also thanked all the volunteers for their support.
