Curtin students bring ‘Serve Miri’ programme to Miri orphans

Miri – 28 November 2016 – 16 student members of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Curtin Sarawak Student Section and Young Engineers Section (YES) Miri brought much cheer to the 23 orphans housed at Pusat Jagaan Anak Kesayangan Kami located in Pujut, Miri, recently.

The students conducted ice-breaking activities, games and a science showcase for the orphans as part of their ‘Serve Miri’ community outreach programme.

The programme, organised by IEM student section members Harry Hau Kwan Shian, Voon Pei Wen and Pavitri Apparavoo, was sponsored by YES, Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, and Teratak Ramlah, a food stall located in Kampung Pulau Melayu here.

Also present was President of the IEM student section, Kho Cheng Hong, who gave an opening speech where he touched on the purpose of the visit and the community outreach projects the student sections carry out in the local commumity.

The orphans had a fun time playing games such as Electric Shock, Salt and Pepper, Spaghetti Building and Egg Drop, and learned the Para Para Dance, with the students. The children also took part in a spelling bee and carried out simple experiments under the supervision of the students during the science showcase.

The visit ended with prize-giving session and closing speeches by Kho and orphanage caretaker Puan Jamaliah. Puan Jamaliah expressed her gratitude to the students for organising such an inspiring event as according to her, the children do not often get to engage in such activities.

As for the students, they were delighted to bring cheer to the children and look forward to organising more meaningful events like it in future.

The IEM Curtin Sarawak Student Section is a student-run academic club affiliated to The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering and Science. The club organises industrial visits and technical talks for its members regularly to provide real-life exposure in preparation for their future careers, as well as serves as a platform for Curtin Sarawak students to network with other IEM student sections in the country, as well as with industry practitioners.

YES is a subsidiary group under IEM which gathers and cultivates young engineers to be future leaders in their respective engineering fields.
