Curtin students staging play to raise funds for PIBAKIS Miri
Posted date:Miri – 25 October 2016 – Following the success of their first big stage production ‘Romeo and Juliet: A Twist in Time’ last year, the Curtin Theatre Club and Curtin Arts & Dance Club of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) are staging their second production entitled ‘Love-O-Medic – Confusion of the Practitioners’ on 5 November 2016.
20 per cent of the proceeds from ticket sales are earmarked for the building fund of Persatuan Ibu Bapa Kanak-kanak Istimewa (PIBAKIS) Miri, a non-profit organisation catering for the welfare of special needs children.
Tickets for the play, which will be held at 5.45 pm in the university’s auditorium, are priced at RM15 (individual) and RM25 (couple) for Curtin Sarawak staff and students, and RM25 and RM45 for individuals and couples respectively for members of the public.
The play was first mooted by Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) student Amsal Sarang; Bachelor of Commerce (Hospitality & Tourism Management and Marketing) student Lavan Rajendra and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance and Marketing) student Joothi Bal, who are all in the final year of their courses and are director and co-directors of the production.
Written by final-year Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication) student Noor Alina Hazeman, and curated by second-year Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication) student Sharthika Sydney Pillay and final-year Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) student Vanessa Yong, the play is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’.
According to club advisor and lecturer of public relations Dr Kamala Vainy Pillai, the play aims to create an interest in the arts and theatre among Curtin Sarawak’s students and enrich the lives of youth in the local community.
“The play is not mere entertainment; it is aimed at giving all those involved in the production an opportunity to build their confidence and hone important skills like communication and organisational skills.
We really hope that this year’s play will attract a bigger audience and we’ll be able to raise a substantial sum for PIBAKIS Miri,” said Dr Kamala.
Meanwhile, student advisor and final-year Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) student Umar Abbas remarked that it is encouraging to see a really diverse group of students of different nationalities, from all faculties and different disciplines, sharing an interest in theatre and the arts and commitment to help the less fortunate.
