IEM Curtin Sarawak Student Section organises visits to palm oil mill and training centre

Miri – 20 October 2016 – The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Student Section of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently organised site visits for 21 its student members, accompanied by 4 lecturers, to MJM Palm Oil Mill and BSTS Sdn Bhd near here.

The visits were made possible with the support of Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering and Science.

At MJM Palm Oil Mill about 66 kilometres from Miri, the students learned all about palm oil processing. They witnessed crude palm oil being extracted and got a lesson in sustainable engineering observing how the entire palm kernel, from shell to seed, is utilised.

At BSTS Sdn Bhd, an occupational safety and health training centre just a stone’s throw from the university campus, they were briefed on the centre’s operations and the courses it provides. This was followed by a tour of its facilities and a chance to observe some training sessions in progress.

According to Kiing Teck Yiew, treasurer of the IEM Curtin Sarawak Student Section, the visits were highly beneficial to the students as they provided valuable learning outside of the classroom and the opportunity to apply theories learnt to real-life industry practice. It also allowed them to meet and network with professional engineers at the companies visited.

The IEM Curtin Sarawak Student Section is a student-run academic club affiliated to The Institution of Engineers (IEM) and Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering and Science.

The club organises industrial visits and technical talks for its members regularly to provide real-life exposure in preparation for their future careers. The club also serves as a platform for Curtin Sarawak students to network with other IEM student sections in the country, as well as with industry practitioners.
