IEM Curtin Student Section goes on study tour of industries in Johore

Miri – 3 May 2016 – The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Curtin Student Section of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently organised a 4-day study tour of key industries in Johore for its members.

The tour was made possible with support from IEM Young Engineers Section (YES) Miri Branch, YES Southern Branch, IEM Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) Student Section and IEM Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Student Section.

Places visited were UTHM’s Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory (EMC Lab), VS Technology Sdn. Bhd. and its parent company, VS Industry Berhad, and DDG Glass Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd.

At the EMC Lab, one of only two in Malaysia, the students were briefed on its functions and visited its semi-anechoic chamber in which EMC tests are conducted to improve product efficiency.

At the plant of plastic injection moulding manufacturers VS Technology, the students toured the facility’s production line and hands-on experience inputting information into the controller of a coordinate measure machine.

Meanwhile, at DDG Glass Manufacturing’s plant, they learned about the process of glass-making and DDG Glass Manufacturing’s range of products, including its super jumbo glass measuring 3.3 by 8 metres.

Besides the site visits, the students had the chance to interact with members of IEM Student Sections at UTHM and UTM, as well as the YES Southern Branch.

The trip was a most fruitful one for the students as they were able to see theories and knowledge they have acquired in class being applied in the industries.

According to petroleum engineering student Genevieve Ann Tang Tuang Kah, being able to witness first-hand how the industries operate, especially the engineering processes such as plastic injection moulding and watching the site engineers solving problems, was nothing short of inspiring.

For mechanical engineering student Callum Tan Dai Min, the visit to UTHM’s EMC Lab was a real eye-opener as prior to the visit, he was unaware of the EMC test requirements for certain products.

The academic clubs and faculties at Curtin Sarawak regularly organise study tours, industrial site visits and field trips for students as an extension of their classroom learning. This gives the students valuable insights into how industries operate and the opportunity to interact and network with industry professionals.
