Ir. Professor Lau Hieng Ho is new Dean of Curtin Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering and Science

Miri – 18 August 2016 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ir. Professor Lau Hieng Ho as its new Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Science effective 1 August 2016.

Ir. Professor Lau is no stranger to the role and its wide leadership responsibilities, having served as the Faculty’s Deputy Dean for a number of years and accrued over two years’ experience as its Acting Dean in recent years.

In congratulating Ir. Professor Lau on his appointment, Curtin Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski wished him every success in his new role, adding that he looked forward to the engineering programmes and research at the Faculty of Engineering and Science being further strengthened under Ir. Professor Lau’s leadership.

Professor Mienczakowski acknowledged how Ir. Professor Lau recently led the Faculty of Engineering and Science through an extensive period of international programme accreditation from professional bodies such as Engineers Australia (EA), Institution of Chemical Engineers United Kingdom (ChemE, UK) and Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), gaining commendations and excellent outcomes with his team on behalf of the university.

“Professor Lau has proven to be a very committed and capable leader and I am confident he will continue to lead the faculty forwards as we continue to accelerate up the research and academic performance rankings,” Professor Mienczakowski said.

Hailing from the pepper-producing town of Sarikei, Sarawak, Ir. Professor Lau graduated with a BEng (Honours) in Civil Engineering before obtaining a doctoral degree, both from Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom. Later, he obtained a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching from Curtin University.

In addition to more than 13 years’ teaching experience at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Ir. Professor Lau was Head of the Faculty’s Department of Civil and Construction Engineering for six years before his appointments as Deputy Dean and Acting Dean.

With his passion for engineering research, he has secured multiple research grants from various government bodies and private institutions. His research interests lie in cold-formed steel, structural stability, connections, and construction waste management, and he has published numerous books and proceedings, as well as articles in SCI-indexed journals and conference papers.

In addition, he is a reviewer for international journals such as the International Journal of Steel and Composite Structures; Structural Engineering and Mechanics; and Advances in Structural Engineering. He is also an international reviewer for research grants offered by the Research Grant Council (RGC) of Hong Kong.

Ir. Professor Lau is a professional engineer with a practicing licence from the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), as well as one of the founding members and Honorary Secretary of the Malaysia Cold-formed Steel Institute (MyCSI) and Vice-Chairman of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch.
