YouthSpeak Forum Miri at Curtin Sarawak this Saturday

Miri – 12 May 2016 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will host YouthSpeak Forum Miri, a forum for local youth organised jointly by global youth movement YouthSpeak and the university’s student organisation AIESEC Curtin Sarawak Chapter, this Saturday.

To be held at the university’s Auditorium, the forum is being held for the first time in Miri and is one of three being held in Malaysia, the other two being in Kuching and Kuala Lumpur.

The global YouthSpeak Forum powered by AIESEC is aimed at bringing together youth and senior leaders to form a diverse cross-sector and multi-generational space to resolve global issues.

Themed Inspire, Engage, and Act, discussions at the forum will focus on five of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) put in place by the United Nations. The five SDGs are ‘Quality Education’, ‘Gender Equality’, ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’, ‘Life in Land’, and ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’.

The forum will kick off with three power talks delivered by speakers from the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG). The three keynote speeches are expected to inspire the participants to think creatively and spark new innovations, as well as be part of positive change and impact on society.

Five breakout sessions will be held simultaneously and participants can join the groups based on the social concerns that interest them the most.

The participants will have a unique opportunity to interact with representatives from the different organisations. Discussions will be conducted based on case studies aimed at lighting the spark to change. At the end of the breakout sessions, the participants will have the opportunity to voice their ideas.

“We strongly believe that the youth play a crucial role in shaping our future, and this forum is a unique opportunity to allow youths in Miri to understand social issues affecting both Malaysia and the world,” said organising chairperson Dhaarshynni Duraragh of the AIESEC Curtin Sarawak Chapter.

“We’d like to invite members of the public interested in participating to check out the Facebook event page, ‘YouthSpeak Miri’, to get more information,” she added.
