Aspiring thespians invited to attend theatre workshop by Curtin Theatre Arts Club

Miri – 8 September 2017 – Budding young actors in Miri are invited to attend a theatre workshop organised by the Curtin Theatre Arts Club (CuTAC) of Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) this Saturday, 9 September 2017.

The interactive and hands-on workshop entitled ‘Acacia Drama and Performing Programme’ will be held from 9 am to 4 pm at the PACTS Education Clubhouse located at Lot 1090, Jalan Brighton. Participation in the workshop is free and it is open to children aged 11 and above.

Organised as part of CuTAC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme called the ‘CuTAC Give Back Programme’, the workshop is specially designed to revive the dying tradition of theatre and performing arts among the younger generation.

It will cover the fundamental phase of planning and leading a production, including team dynamics and audition session, as well as provide insights into what goes on before and during the staging of a production. This includes stage expression, improvisation and crisis management. Participants will also be exposed to a range of creative roles such as acting, directing, stage managing, composing, scriptwriting and other related roles.

It will also feature a make-up session with independent beauty consultant Chloe Chee of Chloe’s Dream Studio. At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to understand the benefits of theatre and arts in relation to personality and leadership skills development, stress management, decision making, as well as quick and creative thinking.

The idea to conduct the workshop was first mooted by PACTS Education Clubhouse Director Yap Choon Ming and CuTAC Student Advisor and final-year hospitality and tourism management and marketing student Lavan Rajendra.

According to Yap, the main objective of the workshop is to create awareness of how the younger population can enrich their lives through the arts.

“The arts are not just mere entertainment. They help individuals discover or improve their communication, improvisational and management skills, resulting in more dynamic and well-rounded individuals,” said Yap.

Meanwhile, advisor of CuTAC and Curtin Malaysia’s Head of Programme of the Faculty of Humanities, Tharshni Kumarasamy, said she believes creative expression in theatre can benefit the young, particularly the introverted ones, to navigate through life’s challenges.

CuTAC was established in 2015 and has since staged three major productions, namely ‘What a Show’, ‘Romeo and Juliet: A Twist of Time’ and ‘Love-O-Medic – Confusion of the Practitioners’.
