‘Curtin Camp-Tastic 2017’ promises meaningful experience for students

Miri – 1 February 2017 – A two-day ‘Curtin Camp-Tastic 2017’ with the theme ‘Cultivate-Innovate-Captivate’ is being organised by Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) for secondary school students from schools in Sarawak and Brunei from 18 to 19 February 2017, and promises to be an exciting and dynamic event given the range of interesting activities in store for them.

It will be held at Curtin Malaysia university campus and will be jointly facilitated by academic staff from the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Faculty of Business and Faculty of Humanities under the guidance of Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Beena Giridharan.

According to Professor Giridharan, the camp will integrate training modules and workshops from all three faculties as well as Curtin Malaysia’s University Life Department. The camp will also feature 40 student volunteers from numerous courses at the university.

She said that, as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a major focus of education in Malaysia, the camp will offer hands-on experience and project-based modules in a variety of subjects including science and engineering, business and entrepreneurship and humanities, as well as generic skill developmental modules.

Professor Giridharan added that the overall aim of the camp is to spark interest in STEM and provide practical and enriching activities to develop critical thinking, problem solving and leadership skills.

Among the highlights will be sessions entitled ‘Astronomy (Journey to Mars)’, ‘Developing a Business Pitch’, ‘Introduction to Photojournalism’, ‘Language Station Game’, ‘Developing Personal Leadership’ and ‘7 Habits of Highly Successful People’.

Professor Giridharan commented that Curtin Malaysia recognises the need to foster close links and develop learning communities between the university and the schools, and promote closer ties and meaningful interaction between school students and students at the university.

She said that the participants will be able to apply the knowledge and skills they acquire from the camp to their academic endeavours in the future.

Registration for the camp is now open to students aged 15 to 18 years and participation is free of charge. For more details, call 085-442 003 or 085-443 002 or email anita.jimmie@curtin.edu.my or esther.tong@curtin.edu.my.
