Curtin Global Village promotes cross-cultural understanding

Miri – 18 September 2017 – 40 foreign delegates experienced Sarawak’s famed warm hospitality at the recent AIESEC in Curtin Global Village event organised by the AIESEC Chapter of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) held at the university’s campus here.

The delegates were from 20 countries including Italy, Netherland, Germany, Ghana, Egypt, Lithuania, Libya, Tunisia, Oman, Algeria, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, South Korea, Japan, Pakistan and India. Also present at the event were 600 guests comprising Curtin Malaysia students and members of the public.

The annual Curtin Global Village aims to promote cross-cultural understanding and interaction between students of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds with the local community through showcases of cultural performances, music, costumes, ethnic cuisine and traditional games. At the event, guests were feted to colourful cultural showcases performed by Curtin Malaysia students and students of local secondary schools in Miri.

According to Organising Chairperson Louise Gan Sugita, AIESEC in Curtin Global Village is an ideal platform to encourage cultural appreciation and the exchange of knowledge among youth, as well as guide them to become future leaders who are tolerant and open-minded.

While in Miri, the foreign delegates also took part in community projects such as ‘Speak Up’, ‘Light of Borneo’, ‘Educate Borneo’, ‘Explore Borneo’, and ‘Adventure in Borneo’ with AIESEC Curtin Sarawak Chapter members.

AIESEC is a global, non-political, independent, non-profit youth leadership organisation run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher learning. With more than 86,000 members in over 129 countries, it provides an international platform for youth to explore and develop their leadership potential through experiential learning and volunteer experiences.
