Curtin Malaysia accounting students go on study trip to Penang
Posted date:Miri – 10 November 2017 – 24 student members the Accounting Club of Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently went on a 4-day study trip to Penang where they visited several companies to learn about their operations and explore internship and career opportunities with them.
The students were accompanied by Assistant Career and Alumni Officer Catherine Jok Wan of Curtin Malaysia’s University Life Department.
The trip was the second to Penang organised by the Accounting Club and was fully sponsored by the university’s Faculty of Business as part of its commitment to ensuring its students get as much industry exposure as possible during the course of their studies. This ensures they have the practical knowledge and skills needed by industry and are job-ready when they graduate.
The companies visited were Crowe Horwath Penang, Motorola Solutions Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., Jabil Penang, Wilmar International, Cypress Semiconductor, Keysight Technologies Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and Invest-in-Penang Berhad.
At Crowe Horwath Penang, the students were briefed on the global public accounting, consulting and technology firm’s business in Malaysia. They were also taken on a tour of the firm’s offices.
Subsequent visits to Motorola Solutions Malaysia, Jabil Penang, Wilmar International and Cypress Malaysia Semiconductor gave the students insights into the companies’ respective operations. They also got to interact with senior employees of Motorola Solutions Malaysia and Jabil Penang.
Next was a visit to the factory of Keysight Technologies Malaysia situated on a sprawling 36-acre site, and second-year accounting and finance students Tan Teong Keat and Ng Chu Chien were fortunate enough to attend a job interview by Keysight’s finance manager. Tan is the current president of the Accounting Club of Curtin Malaysia.
Meanwhile, at Invest-in-Penang Berhad, the Penang state government’s agency promoting investments in Penang, the students learned about the agency’s background, operations and future expansion. They were also encouraged to apply for jobs in the state as it has a lot of job opportunities for commerce students.
Tan said the trip was highly beneficial to the students, particularly in highlighting job opportunities in Penang, and thanked the Faculty of Business for sponsoring it.
Student Vivien Lim, who hails from Penang, said the visits enlightened her of some of the interesting industries in her home state and the job opportunities that await her when she graduates.
