Curtin Malaysia and SIRIM Measurements Technology to strengthen collaboration

Miri – 8 June 2017 – Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and SIRIM Measurements Technology Sdn. Bhd. are looking forward to enhanced collaboration in engineering education and research in the coming months.

This was disclosed by Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive, Professor Jim Mienczakowski, following the signing and exchange of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two organisations during the recent 2-day IEEE Digital Maker Expo held at the university campus.

According to Professor Mienczakowski, the MoU with SIRIM Measurements Technology is part of Curtin University’s ‘One University’ approach and its goal to expand its global footprint through strategic international alliances, partnerships and well integrated campuses.

“We are enlarging our intellectual footprint, enhancing learning experiences for students, building productive industry partnerships and research collaborations, and providing more developmental opportunities for both students and staff,” he remarked.

“We are always committed towards industry-connected innovative teaching and research to develop internationally focused graduates committed to excellence and we achieve this by engaging actively at all levels across all key industry sectors” added Professor Mienczakowski.

Representing SIRIM Measurements Technology at the event were Chief Executive Officer Chew Teck Ming and Director of Corporate Services Hanita Ibrahim.

The synergistic partnership between Curtin Malaysia and SIRIM Measurements Technology will include collaboration in learning and teaching and research and development activities; seminars, conferences and workshops; securing external resources for research and development; exchange of industrial and academic materials, and any other projects of mutual benefit to both parties.

Dean of Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Professor Ir. Lau Hieng Ho, remarked that forging mutually beneficial partnerships with industry is part of Curtin Malaysia’s goal of becoming a recognised regional leader in education and research.

“They help advance our teaching and research, allowing our students graduate with the practical skills, connections and knowledge needed to succeed in the global marketplace,” he said.

On the Curtin Malaysia and SIRIM Measurements Technology collaboration, Professor Ir. Lau said both organisations will work closely together to produce innovative and talented graduates with qualities that would enable them to drive the advancement of technology and manufacturing in the electronic and semiconductor industries.

Meanwhile, Chew said, “SIRIM Measurements Technology is committed to ensuring the success of this collaboration and I am confident that we will be able to develop a very strong industry-academia partnership to promote industry-ready talent and research activities with the goal of supporting the eco-system of the electrical and electronic industry through talent development.”

Through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) within its Faculty of Engineering and Science, Curtin Malaysia and SIRIM Measurements Technology will develop and carry out a range of initiatives and projects that would facilitate these goals.

Among them is an initiative by SIRIM Measurements Technology to offer internship placements to Curtin Malaysia ECE students and to appoint student ambassadors to join the company in promoting test and measurement technology.
