Curtin Malaysia CPA Australia Student Charter organises Kuala Lumpur industrial visit

Miri – 6 September 2017 – 24 students of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), recently went on a 3-day industrial visit to Kuala Lumpur.

Organised by the CPA Australia Student Charter (CPAASC) of Curtin Malaysia, the visit was aimed at giving students majoring in accounting and finance, as well as final year students of various disciplines, valuable exposure to leading companies based in the capital city.

The visit saw them calling on the offices of CIMB Bank, KPMG Malaysia, General Electric (GE) Malaysia, Baker Tilly and Noesis Exed Sdn. Bhd.

Accompanying them was Senior Career and Alumni Officer of Curtin Malaysia’s University Life Department, Baun Inu Pu’un.

At the headquarters of CIMB Bank, they learned about the bank’s operations and the professional programmes it provides. One of its certified accountants shared her experience returning from tertiary studies overseas and going through the bank’s professional programmes, which the students found very enlightening.

At KPMG Malaysia, the students were briefed on the range of services provided by KPMG, one of the world’s Big Four accounting firms. This attracted wide interest from the students, particularly those majoring in accounting and finance.

The visit to GE Malaysia, meanwhile, was particularly interesting to the students of engineering and other business studies. The group met with Curtin Malaysia alumnus Shaun Chien, who is now an application engineer with the company. Chien shared his experiences working at GE and emphasised the importance of both academic and extracurricular achievement in one’s future career.

At the headquarters of accounting and advisory firm Baker Tilly, the students were given a presentation on the company, its services, as well as job opportunities for graduates by Human Resources Manager Danny Yeoh. They were also taken on a tour of the company’s offices during which the students got to meet other members of its staff.

While at the Noesis Exed, an educational institution providing a range of professional programmes from a number of prestigious international professional certifying bodies, the group was briefed on various professional accountancy courses and the benefits of each qualification.

According to the students, the visits to the companies were highly beneficial as they provided valuable insights into career and internship opportunities, graduate programmes, employers’ expectations of graduates, tertiary and professional qualifications and other requirements needed to enter or advance in the various industries.
