Curtin Malaysia graduate receives MICPA best accounting graduate award

Miri – 10 November 2017 – Chai Su Ling, a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) graduate of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), was among 10 graduates from universities in Malaysia conferred the prestigious Malaysia Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) Excellence Award for Best Accounting Graduate 2016 recently.

Chai, who is currently working for Ernst and Young, received the award in recognition of her outstanding academic performance, exemplary leadership qualities and desire for excellence at the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) Excellence Awards 2016/2017 ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur.

She was nominated for the award by her alma mater, the Curtin Malaysia Faculty of Business, and selected from among nominees from both public and private universities in the country.

The other award winners were from Universiti Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, University Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Victoria University (Sunway College) and Taylor’s University.

An exemplary student, Chai won a string of accolades whilst completing her undergraduate studies at Curtin Malaysia, including the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Most Outstanding Foundation Student Award in 2014, Wan Ullok Jugah Chin & Co. Best Paper in Company Law Award in 2015, CPA Australia Book Prize Award in 2016, and Samling Best Student Award in 2017.

Chai also won Ernst & Young’s Best Accounting Student Award for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016. Furthermore, she was placed in the Curtin University Vice-Chancellor’s List for four semesters between 2013 and 2015 and on the Dean’s List for eight semesters between 2012 and 2016.

Outside her studies, Chai was actively involved in the Red Crescent Voluntary Aid Detachment 57 at Curtin Malaysia and Accounting Club Curtin Malaysia, and in extra-curricular activities such as the Deloitte Tax Challenge, PNB Investment Quiz and Curtin University Technology, Science and Engineering (CUTSE) International Conference.

Introduced in 1992, the MICPA Excellence Award for Best Accounting Graduate represents the Institute’s commitment to promote accountancy as a career. The award recognises high-achieving accounting graduates from MICPA-accredited universities who have achieved excellence in the MICPA-CAANZ Programme, their extra-curricular activities and respective careers, as well as in demonstrating exemplary personal traits.

MICPA was established in 1958 and is the only Malaysian-grown professional accounting body. Its MICPA-CAANZ Programme is a dual qualification programme which grants its graduates memberships with both MICPA and CAANZ, carrying the titles ‘Certified Public Accountant, Malaysia’, and ‘Chartered Accountant, Australia and New Zealand’.

Graduates also obtain the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) Passport which provides them with membership support and recognition from 10 premier accounting bodies worldwide.  MICPA-CAANZ professionals are trained and equipped with strong application and problem-solving skills, which make them relevant and trusted advisors.

Curtin’s Bachelor of Commerce offers a wide range of business specialisations, including accounting and finance single and double majors. It is designed to help students gain the theory and practical skills needed to be ready for the job market.
