Curtin Malaysia riding on Curtin’s significant rise in esteemed World University Rankings

Miri – 14 June 2017 – Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), the largest international campus and regional hub of Curtin University, is pleased that Curtin University continues to climb the QS World University Rankings (QSWUR), rising to 262nd worldwide in 2017-18, up from 306th in 2016-17.

Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski echoed the sentiments of Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry who remarked recently that the university’s recent rise in the QSWUR can be attributed to its enhanced research performance, growing level of international collaboration with key partners, and improved international reputation.

“We at Curtin Malaysia are pleased that Curtin University continues to receive global recognition in the QSWUR, ensuring our students, staff and alumni can be proud to be part of one of the leading education providers in the world,” said Professor Mienczakowski.

Assessing universities against six indicators, the latest QSWUR results showed Curtin University’s performance improved significantly in Academic and Employer Reputation this year, with a 26 per cent increase in scores for both measures.

The score for Faculty to Student Ratio has risen by six per cent and the Citations per Faculty improved by five per cent. Curtin has also maintained a perfect score for International Faculty each year since 2013.

Professor Mienczakowski added that these latest achievements in the rankings are also testament to Curtin University’s strong and innovative courses. Curtin Malaysia offers a wide range of Curtin courses in business, engineering, science and humanities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Curtin University achieved outstanding results in another important QS ranking earlier this year – the QSWUR by Subject Rankings – including second in the world for Engineering – Mineral and Mining. Overall, it achieved ranking in 25 subjects, seven more than last year, and ranked as a top 100 university in seven subjects.

Students at Curtin Malaysia study courses identical to those at the other Curtin campuses and the degrees they earn are conferred directly by Curtin University. In addition, they enjoy a similar learning experience and support mechanisms as their counterparts in Australia and Singapore and are offered flexibility in completing their degrees at one of the other campuses.

Professor Mienczakowski also said the latest QSWUR results are timely as Curtin Malaysia has commenced its second semester intake and it could be a strong deciding factor for many potential students seeking to join an international campus of a world-ranked university.
