Curtin Malaysia student proud to represent country at International Study and Friendship Camp

Miri – 14 June 2017 – Philip Ting Kin Tien, a second year Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) student of Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and vice-commandant of the university’s Red Crescent Voluntary Aid Detachment 57, will have the opportunity of a lifetime as one of two Malaysian representatives to the 62nd International Study and Friendship Camp in Austria next month.

The International Study and Friendship Camp is an annual event organised by the Austrian Youth Red Cross (AYRC) to bring together young people involved in the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement at local and national levels around the world.

At the camp, to be held in Langenlois in Lower Austria from 10 to 24 July, these young volunteers will discuss topics based on the seven fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, exchange ideas and opinions, share life-experiences, and discuss cultural perspectives.

“I have always wanted to visit Europe and I am very eager to see Austria’s famed historical landmarks and experience the culture and lifestyle of the country. I also look forward to meeting the representatives of other countries during the camp,” said Ting.

He added that he was very proud to have been selected by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society to represent the country, saying that the selection was done at both the state and national levels. Ting will be joined by fellow Malaysian Red Crescent volunteer Trisha Caroline Pillai from Johor Bahru.

Ting has been active in the Curtin Malaysia Voluntary Aid Detachment 57 (VAD 57), a detachment unit of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, since 2015. The unit is registered under the Malaysian Red Crescent Miri Chapter and operates as a student body under the supervision of the university’s Student Affairs Department.

In addition to conducting activities for its members and supporting the objectives of the Malaysian Red Crescent Miri Chapter, VAD 57 provides first aid and safety training and services to the university community.
