Over 100 bowlers take part in Curtin DPVC Cup competition

Miri – 1 November 2017 – Over 100 bowlers from Sarawak and Brunei took part in the Curtin Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Cup bowling competition jointly organised by the Curtin Bowling Club and the Sports and Recreations Services section of Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia).

The competition, formerly known as the Curtin Open Bowling Competition, was the university’s sixth annual open competition at Megalanes East Bowling Centre Miri.

Launching of the competition was Curtin Malaysia’s Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Beena Giridharan who, in her opening speech, said it was to foster friendly ties between members of the university community and the larger community, in addition to promoting the sport of bowling and the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The team category in the morning round was won by team ‘Crankster’ comprising Jeffrey Lee, Joshua Padan, Terence Lim and Valerie Chin. In second and third place respectively were teams ‘1Malaysia’ and ‘Curtin Challengers’. The three teams walked away with cash prizes, trophies and hampers whilst medals were awarded to the fourth to seventh placed teams.

In the male individual category, Terrence Lim came up tops and was named ‘Best Male Bowler’, followed by Jeffrey Lee and Sakti Satesh in second and third place.

In the female individual category, the title of ‘Best Female Bowler’ went to Siti Sabrena Binti Safari, followed by second-placed Alice Binti John and third-placed Felicia Loh.

Each winner in the individual categories won a trophy and cash prize, while the runners-up received trophies.

Meanwhile, the afternoon round saw ‘Team Survivor’ consisting of Hayati Mohamad, Hasni Juny, Harith Abdullah and Sjafril Djauhari emerging as champion while teams ‘Cranster’ and ‘Cool Striker’ placed second and third.

Cash prizes, trophies and hampers were awarded to the top three teams, while the fourth and fifth placed teams were awarded medals and dinner vouchers. The sixth to ninth placed teams walked away with medals and bowling vouchers and the tenth placed team was awarded medals.

The ‘Best Individual Male Bowler’ and ‘Best Individual Female Bowler’ titles were won by Terrence Lim and Salawaty Binti Sahar respectively.

Meanwhile, the first and second runner-up titles in the individual male category went to Mahmud Bin Serman and Hipeni Saridi, while Fatimah Ayup and Tasnim Bano were first and second runner-ups in the individual female category. Each received a trophy and cash prize, while the fourth place winners were awarded bowling vouchers.

The prizes were presented by Professor Giridharan, Curtin Bowling Club advisor Jameson Malang and Sports and Recreational Services officer Shahrizan Zaini.

The competition was sponsored by Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation Safety and Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Dr Lee Kim Shin, Megalanes East Bowling Centre Miri, Sin Liang Supermarket, Parkcity Everly Hotel Miri, Mega Hotel, Meritz Hotel and the Student Council of Curtin Malaysia.
