Curtin featured in 35 of 54 subjects in new global subject rankings

Miri – 6 July 2020 – Curtin University has featured in 35 of the 54 subjects ranked in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020, and has 23 subjects listed in Australia’s top 10.

Released by the Academic Ranking of World Universities’ publisher ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the latest results show Curtin continues to be recognised globally for teaching and learning excellence.

 Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the results were testament to Curtin’s world-class teaching and learning.

 “I am delighted that Curtin has continued its strong performance with five subjects ranked in the world’s top 100 and 23 in Australia’s top 10. In particular, we are ranked 1st in Australia for Mathematics and 2nd for both Earth Sciences and Chemical Engineering,” Professor Terry said.

“These ranking results reflect Curtin’s standing as a high-impact research institution with strong practical application and industry connections.”

Meanwhile, Professor Simon Leunig, pro vice-chancellor, president and chief executive of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), Curtin’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia located in Miri, remarked that Curtin’s excellent results in the latest rankings are a strong indication of the quality of the courses it offers.

“I am pleased that of the 35 subjects Curtin is ranked in, 15 are related to courses we offer at Curtin Malaysia, so students enrolling at Curtin Malaysia are assured of quality, innovative courses that are world recognised,” said Professor Leunig.

The subjects include Earth & Marine Sciences, Environmental Studies, Business & Management Studies, Chemical Engineering, Civil & Structural Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Psychology, Communication & Media Studies, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science & Information Systems, Mineral & Mining Engineering, Engineering & Technology, Accounting & Finance, Social Sciences & Management, and Arts & Humanities.

Related courses at Curtin Malaysia are the Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Commerce (single and double majors in Accounting, Finance, Banking, Management and Human Resources Management); Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical, Civil & Construction, Electrical & Electronic, Environmental, Mechanical and Petroleum engineering; Bachelor of Science in Applied Geology, Psychological Science, and Health, Safety & Environment; Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Management; Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems & Networking; and Bachelor of Communications.

They also include new courses such as the Bachelor of Computing in Cyber Security; Master of Professional Engineering in Chemical, Petroleum and Mechanical engineering, and Emerging Power Systems; Master of Science in Sustainable Aqua Culture; Master of Management, and Master of Public Health.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects measured the performance of more than 4,000 universities across 54 subjects spanning five fields, including engineering; life sciences; medical sciences; natural sciences; and social sciences.
