Posted date:Tuesday 6 May 2008 –
Curtin Sarawak is celebrating Degree Graduation Ceremony on 9th May 2008 for its students of 2007. The auspicious event will be officiated by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam and will be attended by the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and Bentley Australia delegation. A host of local and foreign invited honourable guests, family members, friends, and lecturers will also be in attendance to witness this celebration of success.
Graduating students are celebrating the successful completion of their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
“This is indeed a very proud moment for all of us,” commented Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor John Evans. “Eighty percent of Curtin students are Malaysians and celebrations like this enforces Curtin’s presence in the region and plays a significant role in contributing towards nation building. Curtin has been preparing for a skilled and technologically savvy workforce that will embody professionalism, cultural diversity, ethical behaviour and a penchant for life long learning.”
The number of graduates from the Sarawak Campus has been increasing annually based on the larger intakes of students in recent years. “Very soon, the venues within Miri will not be large enough to accommodate us and we may have to start thinking of ways to manage and organize such events,” comments Professor Evans who also heads the Curtin Graduation Committee.
Curtin Sarawak expects to graduate at least four hundred students in 2008 with many of the graduates opting for careers internationally. “The spread of Curtin graduates across the world places us in an excellent strategic position as this exposes our Campus to the international market,” says Professors Evans.
At the same time, Curtin is also holding Award and Scholarship Ceremony on 10 May 2008 commencing at 5PM, at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club.
More than seventy of the graduating students will be the recipients of various prestigious awards from the top industries at a separate Awards and Scholarship Ceremony to recognize their excellent academic achievements.
The prestigious awards are from some of the top industries led by Chief Minister’s Award and the Deputy Chief Minister’s Award to recognise top graduating Foundation students, current and graduating degree students and Curtin University staff.
“Excellent achievement needs to be recognised and be used as models to inspire other young minds to excel and to learn that effort makes all the difference,” commented Datuk Patinggi Dr. George Chan Hong Nam, who will also officiates the ceremony in front of proud parents, students and friends.
Various other prestigious awards from Curtin University will include the Pat Addison Award, Bill Nichols Scholarship, Curtin Sarawak Scholar, Pro-Vice Chancellor Scholar for international students, Vice-Chancellor’s List, YB Lee Kim Hin and Dato Wee Han Wen Execellence and Community Awards, Western Australia Premier Scholars and Curtin Staff Study Support Award.
All awards and scholarships are awarded based on merit and the recipients are of the highest caliber in terms of their academic achievement. “Curtin University is proud to be able to produce so many strong students who will embody all the Curtin graduate attributes where they are able to apply discipline knowledge, have thinking, information, communication, professional and technology skills, life long learners with an international perspective and are culturally understanding,” exclaimed Dean Dr Joan Gribble
