Curtin Malaysia hosting live webinar featuring alumni in various industries
Posted date:Miri – 29 July 2020 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) will be hosting a live public webinar entitled ‘Going Places with a Curtin Degree’ featuring six Curtin alumni who graduated with degrees in engineering, business and mass communications from 2 pm to 5 pm on 1 August 2020.
Hosting the webinar will be Jane Teh and Professor Muhammad Sadruddin Mohd. Saidfudin, president and vice-president of the Curtin University Alumni Malaysia Chapter respectively, and the session moderators will be current students of Curtin Malaysia.
Those interested to know more about tertiary education with Curtin and earning degrees that are highly regarded by employers globally, as well as learn from the panellists’ experiences, are invited to join the webinar.
The event, which will be split into three sessions – Engineering (2 – 3 pm), Business (3 – 4 pm) and Mass Communications (4 – 5 pm), will see the panellists giving insights into their careers and how their Curtin degrees made a difference for them. They will also talk about current and emerging trends in their respective industries and give future students a better idea of the career prospects awaiting them when they graduate.
The panellists for the Engineering Session will be Johnny Wong Kee Hong, a Graduate Environment Advisor with Shell Malaysia Exploration and Production (SMEP), and Chew Whei Yi, a NPI (new product introduction) engineer with Clarion Malaysia.
Wong obtained his Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Engineering at Curtin Malaysia in 2019 and is now contributing towards Shell’s climate ambition where he is actively involved in monitoring, analysing and reporting SMEP’s environmental performance, especially those related to greenhouse gases.
In a secondary role, Wong facilitates conversation among HSSE leadership on cash savings and efficiency gain initiatives that generate greater value for the company.
Chew graduated with Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics & Communications Engineering from Curtin in 2015. She started her student journey at Curtin Malaysia and later transferred to the main campus in Perth in her final year. As a student at Curtin Malaysia, she was active in the Curtin Volunteers! and AIESEC, and volunteered with Humanitarian Affairs of Curtin Malaysia as a short-term English teacher in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Meanwhile, the panel for the subsequent Business Session will comprise business entrepreneur and CEO Vinodh Menon and human resources professional Vignesh Baboo.
Vinodh graduated from Curtin Malaysia in 2015 with a Bachelor of Commerce in Public Relations and Marketing. Since then, he has gone on to establish four companies – Goodtimes Ticketing Sdn. Bhd., Home Health Care Sdn. Bhd., August Beauty Enterprise and KV Cakes & Desserts Enterprise – in the fields of events, healthcare, beauty products and food and beverage respectively.
As a student at Curtin Malaysia, Vinodh established the Curtin Miri Toastmasters Club and Curtin Malaysia PR Club, and also initiated the Borneo Youth Leadership Conference, an annual conference for youth leaders in the region, from 2014 to 2016.
Vignesh graduated from Curtin Perth with a Bachelor of Commerce in Management and Human Resource Management. He is an award-winning human resources professional with solid leadership experience with Top Fortune 500 multinational companies.
In his current role as the Group Chief Human Resources Officer of the Chemopharm Group of Companies, Vignesh sits on the Executive Leadership Committee to support the Board of Directors and shareholders in executing the group’s overall business plan and strategic direction across Southeast Asia. Prior to that, he led the HR function for General Electric’s healthcare business and its Organisation & Talent Development portfolio in Malaysia. He also held multiple leadership roles with Deloitte, L’Oréal and BAT Malaysia.
For the Mass Communications Session, the panellists will be Renee Loretta Foong, a news presenter, host, emcee, voice-over talent and educator; and Karen Kuek, a freelance TV producer.
Foong graduated from Curtin Malaysia with a Mass Communication degree in 2008. She is a PR consultant and newscaster for the English news at Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), and has hosted and emceed various events such as conferences, award ceremonies and graduation ceremonies for the corporate, government and education sectors.
In the corporate sector, Foong has been responsible for PR, communications, events, marketing, media relations and brand development. She has a passion for leadership development among youths and teaches Communications, Public Relations, Events, Personal Development Skills and English courses at tertiary institutions.
Kuek graduated from Curtin Malaysia with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications in 2009 and has 12 years’ experience in local and international film and TV productions. She focuses on production managing, producing and assistant directing across different genres such as food shows like Celebrity Chef: East vs West and Cooking for Love; travel shows like Wonderful Indonesia and Travel for Love; and reality shows like Asia’s Got Talent, Fit for Fashion, The Apartment and Say Yes To The Dress Asia. She was also involved in the production of drama series Gol & Gincu; feature film Songlag; documentaries such as My Ghost Story Asia and No Ordinary Family; as well as commercials.
