Curtin Malaysia welcomes Curtin’s achievements in latest QS subject rankings, including second in world for Mineral and Mining Engineering
Posted date:Miri – 6 March 2020 – Curtin University has again been named the world’s second-ranked university and number one in Australia for Mineral and Mining Engineering in the 2020 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
This outstanding achievement is most welcome at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) as it is a strong testimony of the quality of courses and education Curtin provides not only at its main campus in Perth, but across all its campuses in Western Australia, Malaysia, Dubai, Singapore and Mauritius. Curtin Malaysia, situated in Miri, is Curtin University’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia.
The latest results show Curtin achieved ranking in 27 subjects, three more than last year, including two subjects in the top 50 in the world and 10 in the top 200. It ranked 40th in the world and fifth in Australia for Earth and Marine Sciences and held its position as second in the world and first in Australia for Mineral and Mining Engineering.
Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the latest results highlighted Curtin’s position as a leader in Mineral and Mining Engineering.
“I am delighted that Curtin has upheld its position as the world’s second-ranked university for Mineral and Mining Engineering for the fourth year in a row, while continuing to improve across various other fields,” Professor Terry said.
She added that Curtin’s strong position in the latest rankings are a testament to its commitment to high-quality research and teaching.
Echoing Professor Terry’s sentiments, Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Simon Leunig said the latest results were also very profound for Curtin Malaysia which offers relevant Curtin courses in the areas of Mineral and Mining Engineering and Earth and Marine Sciences, including the Bachelor of Science in Applied Geology, and Bachelor of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering and in Environmental Engineering.
“The QS subject rankings offer the world’s most popular source of comparative data about university performance. Our students are thus assured that they are taking courses that are among the best in the world,” Professor Leunig added.
The latest edition of the rankings showed Curtin achieved six subject rankings in the top 100 globally, with four placing in the 51-100 band including Architecture/ Built Environment, Engineering – Civil and Structural, Nursing, and Sport-related subjects. Curtin has also ranked for the first time in the subject of Law, placing in the 201-250 band out of a total of 300 universities ranked.
Also significant for Curtin Malaysia is Curtin’s placing in the top100 for Civil and Structural Engineering, top 150 for Communication and Media Studies and Chemical Engineering; top 200 for Accounting and Finance, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Environmental Sciences, and Psychology; top 250 for Business and Management Studies; top 300 for Mechanical Engineering; and top 350 for Computer Science & Information Systems.
These rankings highlight the strengths of courses offered at Curtin Malaysia such as the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Construction Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering; Bachelor of Science in Psychological Science, and Computing; Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems & Networking; Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance, Management and Marketing, and Management and Human Resources Management; Bachelor of Business Administration; and Bachelor of Communications.
At postgraduate level, Curtin Malaysia offers Curtin’s Master of Science in Project Management, Master of International Business, Master of Commerce in Marketing, and Master of Engineering Management, as well as postgraduate research programmes in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Accounting, and Management, among others.

The 2020 QS World University Rankings by Subject considered more than 1,368 universities in 83 countries across 48 academic disciplines and five broad Faculty areas.
