Curtin Rugby Union Sevens Tournament

Curtin Rugby Union will be hosting its first Sevens Tournament from the 3rd to 4th of May 2008, from 8:30am to 5pm. The tournament will take place at the Curtin Rugby field at Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Campus.

This first ever Sevens tournament will no doubt be filled with adrenalin pumping professional rugby action. International Rugby teams from across the country from Brunei, Kuching and Sabah are to participate in the tournament.

Curtin Rugby Union was formed by two of Curtin’s national players, Azfar Zubri Bin Safri and Nicholas Gala Bato who has played in numerous international tournaments and local competitions. This elite club was formed in 2006 and has built to date a reputation for itself within Sarawak and hopefully internationally as a professional rugby union. “The organizing committee has so far done a great job with their Touch Rugby Tournament recently, I personally think this upcoming event is going to be fruitful,” exclaimed Curtin Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor John Evans.

The tournament will comprise of four teams in a group. The number of groups that are created will be determined by the number of teams that turn up for the tournament. All the teams will be battling for the championship trophy comprising of medals and a cash prize of three thousand five hundred ringgit Malaysia.

In the group stages, teams would have to face off each member of their group with the top two advancing to the quarterfinals of the championship trophy while the last two teams advance to the quarterfinals of the bowl championship. The knock out stage begins from the quarter finals and progresses onto the finals.

According to Organising Committee, Vimel Veera, “We have put a lot of effort and commitment in making our very first rugby tournament a success, non-the less, it is also our very own way to promote Curtin’s name in the national arena. We always welcome participation from public, so, we hope to see the public at Curtin Rugby Union Sevens Tournament!”
