Curtin Sarawak Malaysia to be the First Private University in Sarawak to organize Open Source EXPO

In conjunction with Software Freedom Day 2008, the IEEE Student Branch Curtin Sarawak Malaysia will be organizing a six-day Open Source Expo in Curtin University of Technology Sarawak.

The Open Source Expo intends to equip the public with knowledge on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) as well as to encourage its usage through the talk, showcases and technical workshop. Students will be exposed to FOSS throughout the whole event and hence enhance their employability.

An introductory talk on FOSS will be conducted by Mr Terence Tan, lecturer from Curtin
Sarawak Malaysia on the 6th September 2008 and it is open to the public. Follow by 4 days (8th –11th September) of showcasing and InstallFest, in which several PCs and laptops that are installed with different distributions of Linux Operating Systems and FOSS will be showcased so as to let the visitors to try out and have better understanding on FOSS.

During the event, a “painless” way to try out Linux OS is introduced, that is creating virtual machines with the use of VirtualBox, Sun Microsystems. This gives users ample time to experience the operating system without the hassle of partitioning and dual-booting. Visitors who are interested in trying are encouraged to bring along their laptops for on-the-spot installations/guidance. There will be a practical workshop on FOSS on 12th September 2008 and participants will have the chance to learn how to operate specific FOSS for practical use.

IEEE Student Branch Curtin Sarawak Malaysia is inviting the public to come and join us
throughout the whole event and together we support the Free and Open Source Software. Besides, incredible prizes will be given off to the lucky draw winners.
