Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia offering two new postgraduate programmes
Posted date:Miri – 21 November 2008 – Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia is offering two new postgraduate programmes in Accounting and Project Management to complement its Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. The programmes, which will commence in February 2009, offer graduates and working professionals the opportunity to further develop their career potential by pursuing Master of Accounting and Master of Science (Project Management) degrees at the university’s School of Business.
The Master of Accounting programme specially designed for non-accounting professionals is aimed at providing graduates from disciplines other than accounting with knowledge and skills in accounting and related financial management, as well as the legal aspects of business.
Students will acquire a comprehensive understanding of, and competencies in accounting, auditing, taxation and financial management concepts, methods and practices essential to professional accounting practice not only in Malaysia, but overseas as well.
In addition, they will enhance their capabilities in conceptual thinking, interpersonal and communication skills, and the use of analytical methods required for effective diagnosis of accounting and financial management theories, concepts and techniques.
The programme is designed to meet the educational requirements for membership of CPA Australia, with reciprocal recognition by selected overseas professional accounting bodies. It consists of 12 units and can be completed in 18 months of full-time study or the equivalent part-time. Applicants, excluding accounting majors, must have a bachelors degree from a recognised tertiary education or an equivalent academic qualification.
The Master of Science (Project Management) programme, meanwhile, is an innovative programme that takes a generic approach to project management, providing students specialised knowledge and skills necessary for performing the role of a project manager in a variety of industries and sectors.
“Project management might be a distinct professional discipline, with its own body of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques, but our programme’s unique generic approach makes it applicable to a wide range of industries, such as construction, engineering, education, health, commerce, information technology and research and development. It is in fact one of the first project management degrees to be generic rather than industry-specific,” says Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia’s Vice Pro-Chancellor, Dr. John Evans.
He adds that the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training has predicted that project management will be the fastest-growing occupation by 2010, and Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia is offering the programme to meet the growing global demand for project management professionals.
The programme, which is endorsed by the Australian Institute of Project Management, is taught by staff that have had an extensive range of professional experience in project management and are most qualified to offer practical relevancy to student learning. It consists of ten units plus an end-of-programme project and can be completed over 18 months of full-time study or the equivalent part-time.
Entry requirements include an appropriate bachelors degree from a recognised tertiary institution and a minimum of two years relevant work experience. Alternatively, a student may be entered into the programme by first completing the Graduate Certificate in Project Management.
