CV! Made a visit to Rumah Dok
Posted date:A group of enthusiastic volunteers from Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Campus paid a warm visit to the longhouse community in Sungai Arang, Marudi.
Organised by Curtin University Life and Curtin Volunteers! (CV!) of Sarawak, the longhouse visit by these 24 student volunteers and 9 working staffs was at Rumah Dok Anak Kial, Sungai Teniku with Tuai Rumah Dok Anak Kial as the head of the longhouse. Instead of merely visiting the longhouse as guests, 33 volunteers come and lend a hand to the community with the intention to further improve their current lifestyle by assisting the community in any way possible.
Few of the activities done during these 2 days 1 night journey were cleaning the longhouse consisting of 19 rooms, planting flowers along the areas of the longhouse, helping out with the kitchen works and the list goes on.
Apart from helping the communities, the volunteers were also greatly exposed to the Iban’s traditional culture in preparing their local delicacies, playing different types of traditional musical instruments, dancing their traditional dances, as well as living together as one big family. Although the volunteers had little difficulties in adapting to the Iban’s lifestyle and no doubt, had fun interacting with the Iban communities.
This exciting event held on a yearly basis in conjunction to the John Curtin Weekend has definitely brought much joy to the Iban communities as well as encouragement to more volunteers to reach out to society.
