Webinar featuring Curtin Malaysia alumni working abroad on Facebook Live this Saturday
Posted date:Miri – 14 October 2020 – Following the success of the first two instalments of its ‘Going Places with a Curtin Degree’ Live Webinar Series highlighting the careers of successful Curtin alumni, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is hosting a third webinar this Saturday (17 October) featuring three Curtin Malaysia alumni panellists from Malaysia, Vietnam and Bangladesh who are now pursuing international careers.
The webinar will be streamed live for public viewing on Curtin Malaysia’s Facebook at http://bit.ly/CurtinLiveWebinar between 2.00 pm and 3.30 pm (UTC/GMT +8).
The panellists are Shoo Lik Fang from Johore who is now working in Singapore, Nguyen Quang Minh from Hanoi who is working in Brisbane, and Bangladeshi Araf Bin Tarek who is fulfilling his dream of working in Malaysia.
Facebook users, including Curtin alumni, Curtin Malaysia students and staff, and potential students interested to pursue Curtin degrees at Curtin Malaysia, are welcome to join. Participation is free and they stand the chance to win exclusive Curtin merchandise during the session.
They will get to discover from the panellists what unique challenges one might face working in a foreign country, and just how far a Curtin degree can take graduates when pursuing a global career. They will also get to hear about the panelists’ university experiences, how the global pandemic has impacted their industries, and their views of the job market in a post-COVID economy.
Shoo graduated from Curtin Malaysia with a Bachelor of Commerce in Management and Marketing in 2018 and currently works as a sales and marketing executive with SOCOTEC Certification Singapore, a management consultancy company based in the island state.
During her studies at Curtin Malaysia, Shoo led an active student life and was in the Curtin Malaysia Student Council. Due to her excellent academic results, she was consistently placed on the Dean’s List and won several awards, including Best Student in 3rd Year International Business Unit and Best Management and Marketing Graduate.
Nguyen currently works as a process engineer for the Ecolab Manufacturing Plant in Brisbane where he works under the plant manager to lead process improvement projects with the aim of increasing efficiency and quality in the production of cleanliness and hygiene products. Previously, following his graduation from Curtin Malaysia with a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering in 2017, he worked in a pesticide/herbicide manufacturing plant and a steel plant.
At Curtin Malaysia, Nguyen was actively involved in the Curtin Oratory and Debating Society (CODES) and won first place in the technical debate competition held in conjunction with the National Chemical Engineering Symposium (NACES) 2015. He also participated in several international conferences such as the 3rd International Conference on Green Chemical Engineering Technology and the 6th Conference on Emerging Energy and Process Technology.
Araf graduated from with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting in 2017. Besides being a business development manager with lead management system provider SalesCandy International in Kuala Lumpur, Araf is an accomplished motivational speaker. He has been speaking at events in various countries since a very young age, initially through debating, a passion he was able to further nurture at Curtin Malaysia as a member of CODES and Model United Nations Curtin Malaysia (MUNCM).
Araf was also president of various student clubs and events, including the Borneo Model United Nations Conference, MUNCM and Curtin Finance Club. He was awarded Best Delegate at the Borneo Model United Nations Conference, Honourable Mention Award at the BRAC Model United Nations, and Outstanding Delegate Award at the LORD Model United Nations – all in 2016.
The webinar will be hosted by Curtin Malaysia alumnus Julius Tan and current final-year business student Casandra John.
After graduating from Curtin Malaysia with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication in 2014, Tan started his career as a financial journalist, during which he won two awards for financial writing – the Dato’ Koh Peng Chor Excellence in Finance and Economy Article Award 2016 and Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Leong Hoy Kum Excellence in Property Article Award 2015.
Tan later ventured into the field of data analytics and is currently working as the lead analyst at Big Data consultation firm Ebdesk Malaysia where he helps companies and government agencies uncover meaningful and actionable insights from data.
Meanwhile, Casandra, who is from Miri, is an exemplary student who is a high-achiever in both her academic and extracurricular pursuits. Her active student life has seen her being an executive committee member of the Curtin Volunteers!, a Curtin University-wide student volunteer organisation; stage director for the Transcendance 5 modern dance production; secretary of the Curtin Bodybuilding & Physique Club, and presently, artistic director of the campus’ ‘After Hours’ video channel.
