Curtin Malaysia Foundation students clean up beach as part of community outreach programme
Posted date:Miri – 26 June 2018 – 26 Foundation in Commerce students of the Faculty of Business at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently took part in a beach-cleaning exercise at a one kilometre stretch of beach at Lutong popular for paramotor sports and sunset-watching.
The activity, which was part of their community outreach programme, was a joint effort by the Department of Foundation Studies of the university’s Faculty of Business and the Miri City Council.
Accompanying the students were Acting Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business Dr. Shamsul Kamariah Abdullah; Head of the Department of Foundation Studies Wendy Law Li Ling; and lecturers Siti Kasmah Hj. Mohammad Kassim, Tan Sin Sieng and Anita Johari.
Law said such activities support Curtin University’s commitment to ‘making tomorrow better’ and are aimed at creating awareness of the importance of maintaining clean public beaches for the benefit and enjoyment of the local community. They also help cultivate a sense of community and spirit of volunteerism amongst the students.
Although they were a small number, the group managed to collect 40 large gunny sacks of rubbish comprising mainly discarded plastic refuse in just two hours. The bags were then loaded onto lorries provided by the City Council for disposal.
