Curtin’s continued climb up global rankings a boon for all its campuses, including Curtin Malaysia

Miri – 11 June 2018 – Curtin University’s continued climb up the global university rankings is a boon to both the Perth-based university and its four international campuses, including its Malaysian campus, said Pro Vice-Chancellor and President of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) Professor Jim Mienczakowski.

This is because there is no differentiation between the education provided and in the degrees graduates receive at each campus, he said when commenting about Curtin University ranking 250th among the world’s universities in the 2018-2019 QS World University Rankings (QSWUR) announced last Thursday.

He said potential students view Curtin Malaysia as no different from Curtin University in Australia as the university’s global standing and reputation for innovation and excellence extends to its Malaysian campus as well.

Students at Curtin Malaysia study courses identical to those at the other Curtin campuses and the degrees they earn are conferred directly by Curtin University. In addition, they have access to the same online learning resources and student support mechanisms as their counterparts in Australia, and are offered flexibility in completing their degrees at one of the other campuses.

Curtin was also in the past week ranked 68th in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THEWUR) Young University Rankings, a ranking of the top 250 institutions under 50 years of age. The university has risen 16 places in the ranking since 2017, and two places to 12th in Australia.

Curtin’s scores rose for four of the ranking’s five indicators (Citations, Teaching, Research, and International Outlook) and maintained a stable score for Industry income.

Curtin University is Western Australia’s largest university, its forward-looking nature mirrored in its expanding global footprint with campuses in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius, as well as course delivery through more than 90 partner institutions worldwide.

Curtin Malaysia is Curtin University’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia, besides being among the leading tertiary institutions in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. It is also well-established as the top international university in Borneo following nearly 20 years of existence providing a world-class education and learning experience to students from around the world.

Curtin’s growing reputation has seen the university rapidly rise up the international rankings in recent years. In 2017, it was ranked among the top one per cent of the world’s universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARRWU). In addition, it ranked second in the world for mineral and mining engineering, and in the top 100 for architecture/built environment, art and design, earth and marine sciences, education, nursing and sports-related subjects in the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

“We are very proud that Curtin continues to receive global recognition, ensuring its students, staff and alumni can be proud to be involved with one of the leading education providers in the world,” Professor Mienczakowski said.

According to him, Curtin ensures that all its campuses are viewed as equally important and connections and collaborations across locations are becoming more embedded in their daily practices, including collaborative research, development and internationalisation of courses, and bi-directional delivery of course material between campuses.

Curtin’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses are regularly reviewed by industry, business and government to ensure graduates are prepared for today’s changing global market. The university has also incorporated work integrated learning activities and introduced technology-rich environments that recreate real workplaces at its campuses so students can graduate with the skills and knowledge that employers require.

Curtin University’s outstanding achievement in the QSWUR and other rankings augurs well for Curtin Malaysia and its other international campuses.
